Daily Kos censors cartoonist Ted Rall over ‘ape-like depiction’ of Obama

Mediaite takes the position that Ted Rall might be a racist.

http://www.mediaite.com/online/daily-kos-censors-cartoonist-over-ape-like-depiction-of-president-obama/

I am certain that there are strong opinions about Daily Kos, censorship, Ted Rall, his cartoons, whether he is a racist, and even Mediaite for that matter... but my question is: does Ted Rall draw Obama as 'ape-like'?

I've read Rall for years now and I just never made that leap. (But maybe it's because I'm a white guy and agree more with Rall's POV on matters political, and less with Obama's.)

As premise, I tend toward devaluing Daily Kos and the mob mentality they occasionally demonstrate in this particular matter. Remember they got Scott Prouty, the guy who filmed Romney's 47% video, banned due to the "self-policing standards" the members there exhibit. So perhaps my overriding bias is a derogatory view of DK.

Lots of moving parts here, but to distill: Is Ted Rall a bigot? Does he draw Obama looking simian? If he does, is that worthy of being censored at Kos -- or even here, for that matter? I tend to answer 'no' to those three questions.

Am I wrong?

That's clear if you pay attention.

If Kos wants to censor him because he is critical of Obama's policies, that's their right - but trying to paint him as a racist is absurd. Were that the case, then it would be expected that every black character he draws would have a similar look and that's not the case. When he draws "good" characters (regardless of race) they are more refined (as refined as he can get, I guess). When he draws "bad" characters (regardless of race), they all tend to look like the caricature under discussion - crude, broad faced, stubbly and/or wild haired.

He stereotypes - but not by race or ethnicity. His stereotype is based on his opinion of the person he is mocking. He is mocking the President and DK doesn't like that. But it's not because Rall is racist.

There are plenty of talented, non-bigoted cartoonists out there.

Shame on Ted Rall for such a disgusting depiction of our President.

And browsing through his other work, I'm not sure what kind of sick and twisted fan base made him as relevant as he is today... but they must be a frightening bunch.

Other publications and websites should follow the lead of Daily Kos.

I enjoy Rall's cartoons. I enjoyed them when he was critical of Bush, too.

Why that's "frightening" to you is a mystery to me

And I respect no one that produces it or is entertained by it.

People like him always jump the shark eventually when the shock factor begins to fade and they want more attention.

Sadly, he had to resort to racism to achieve that.

But his insensitive and even downright nasty side became clear to me in 2004, when the Washington Post properly dropped him for this ugly cartoon (which I think was intended as a poke at the Bush administration):

not even close. I think he deliberately draws poorly. During the Bush years it was very hard sometimes to figure out who was who in his toons.

That having been said the real issue is Rall can be extremely harsh in his criticism of Obama. He also brings Obama's family into it, which for me is beyond the pale. But Rall also has done some excellent toons expressing truths that others won't state. I hope he doesn't get censored off the web. There have been enough of those already.

His July 5, 2004, cartoon mocked Condoleezza Rice, depicting her character being sent to a "racial re-education camp" where she refers to herself as a "house nigga" and George W. Bush's "beard". Rall, a white man, was accused of racism by Project 21, a conservative organization with black membership.

Whether he meant it that way I have no idea.

However, I always will come down on the side of anti-censorship, that is just how I am.
