'Cannibal cop' accused of killing man who wanted to be murdered, eaten

Authorities in Germany are working to determine whether the so-called "cannibal cop" ate a man he met online who wanted to be murdered and eaten, The Independent reports.

The suspect, a 55-year-old handwriting and document analyst identified as "Detlev G," was arrested Wednesday after police say he confessed to chopping up a 59-year-old man who traveled 250 miles to meet with him, according to the Associated Press.

The two met in an Internet chatroom dedicated to cannibalism and communicated extensively before agreeing to meet in person and plan the murder.

As bizarre as the case may seem, the details are strikingly similar to a murder that took place in Germany in 2002.

Armin Meiwes was sentenced to life in prison for killing and eating a man who responded to his ad on the website The Cannibal Cafe.

That 2002 case and the recent case both took place in the same country. I hope that the news reports of these types of macabre cases do not prompt others to follow suit.
