General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsI think Fox News is bad.
I think it has a harmful effect on society, and that it also harms the people who watch it. If I know that someone watches Fox News regularly, I think less of that person. I don't think it should be banned, but I think we would all be better off if there were no Fox News, and I think that the popularity of Fox News is an indication of deeper problems in our society. While I believe consenting adults have the right to watch Fox News, I would certainly encourage them not to.
Does this mean I hate freedom and the first amendment?

(38,506 posts)You just don't like lying sacks of garbage. A healthy reaction.

(11,804 posts)Frankly if one of those sacks of garbage comes into a room I'm in, I'll make my excuses and leave. I just don't feel comfortable around sacks of garbage.

(11,804 posts)I guess a fine line would be "And I think that people shouldn't support businesses who advertise there." At that point you are hoping to financially punish the Fox Network for expressing opinions you disagree with (and that I disagree with).

(21,475 posts)establishments that I know donate to the Republicans. If they donate money then I don't do business with them. I will not accept that even one dime of my money will be spent against my well being. I don't however punish for beliefs, just if they use money to enhance those beliefs. clear as mud I guess.

(11,804 posts)I mean this sort of argument go on for a while; and I can certainly see where you are coming from.
And certainly them paying to advertise on the local right wing radio station may well indicate that they also send money to the local RNC.
That said, it's hard to convince people of the wrongness of republicanism without talking to them, and if we boycott those businesses do we cut ourselves off from the opportunity to point out how crummy republicans are?
I don't know - I do oppose all boycotts designed to punish someone for using free speech; but beyond that there's a lot of issues involved.

(20,709 posts)But I don't equate opposition to porn with opposition to freedom or the first amendment.

(20,709 posts)It's about whether saying that something is bad or harmful implies that one is against freedom of expression.

(4,713 posts)should be allowed to label it as news either. I think because of the fact that 95% of what they say is complete & utter bullshit they should be required to label it as entertainment rather than news.
I am well aware of the fact that they took their case to court & won the right to lie. However, I think a disclaimer should be required.
