I have no words for blatant racism like this-Dancer taken into custody for having black instructors

http://www.khou.com/news/local/oklahoma-dancer-houston-police-cps-234062201.html

snip-

That’s why the trio from Oklahoma traveled to Houston in the first place. To spend the weekend dancing and training with some of the industry’s best.

-snip

snip-

“We were on the GPS trying to figure out where the hotel was. And we sat there and we dozed off.”

They said before they knew it, the police showed up and surrounded the car.

-snip

“I told him I had a notarized letter from her parents stating that we have full guardianship over her while we’re here.”

-snip

-----------------------------------------

The child was taken to CPS. Simply because her teachers are black and traveling with a white girl...in 2013.

I always want to say that we're making progress, but we aren't in so many ways. Also, we need more stringent requirements to become Deputy Sheriffs in this town. The wrong guys are signing on.

Also, on edit, her mother has posted a comment in response to the typical idiotic commenters on KHOU.

seems like it because we hear about so much more due to social media. Due to where I grew up we always dealt with the racist ass cops screwing with us constantly & the getting pulled over thing is normal but detaining and CPS is nuts. I really feel like some weird memo went out saying there is a free for all on minorities & it scares the shit out of me.

The getting pulled over thing shouldn't be normal. Not in a normal society. It irritates the hell out of me. I do feel, sometimes, that--with the election of a black President--it's somehow become okay to be blatantly racist again.

more strongly than they did before. President Obama's election goes against their expectations of how the world works. So they have to get louder to compensate.

still oozing out in force because it is a super bug that is hard to eradicate. The Houston PD is simply more proof of the green ooze.

I love the fact that a bunch of old white dudes seem to think they can make these proclamations? meanwhile, I am scared to death to let my 12 year old son go to the high school football games with his brother because he may lip off to the wrong person. My older son has figuredout that it's a difference between life & death. It sucks that we are still living this way in 2013.

Not saying the metro folks are all angels but WOW, whenever I read about 'cops' killing someone holding a garden hose or killing a kid carrying a toy firearm or well anything completely fucked up...it is always deputies that are doing the fucking up?

Maybe the entire Sheriff system is garbage and needs to be replaced by 'cops'. Sure seems like it if you read the news.

There have been a number of "arrested while black" stories as well. What the hell is wrong with people.

Would the trio be detained if the 13 year old girl was in the company of two 21 year old African american women? (doubtful, unless there were other circumstances)
Would they have been detained if she were in the company of a couple of 21 year old white guys? (probably, and I know that there are DU'ers here who would scream bloody murder at the cops if they didn't, and at the parents in either event.)

Maybe it's mostly just run-of-the-mill sexism.

company of two black males.

I know it's difficult to realize in this year, but racism is alive and well.

Call it run-of-the-mill racism, but it's racism.

They had the notarized paperwork and everything...and yet they still referred to them as 2 black men. Sorry.

If not, then racism may not be the driving factor. Racism that only affects black men isn't entirely racism.
