http://reagancoalition.com/articles/2013/obama-gun-restrictions-continue-with-bullet-lead-factory-shutdown.html.."The Obama administration is continuing its attack on the second amendment by imposing severe restrictions on bullet lead. The Environmental Protection Agency has forced the Doe Run Lead Smelter, located in Heculaneum, Mo., to permanently shut down its doors. The agency had been trying to get the smelter, which produces lead used in bullets, to close down its doors since 2008. The smelter had been operating since 1892, but the factory will shut down at the end of this month and make it more difficult for Americans to purchase bullets for guns."

The EPA first went after the Doe Run Co. and its smelting operation in 2008. President Obama took office in 2009. If enforcement of environmental safeguards was used to secretly undermine access to ammunition, the plot was launched by the notorious gun-grabbers in the Bush/Cheney administration.

(16,402 posts)[font color="navy" face="Verdana"]Lead is highly toxic to animals (including humans) and to the environment. Here in California, lead has been banned in certain types of hunting ammunition for that reason. Bullets can be made of other, less-toxic substances.
If the EPA is shutting down lead smelters, it's because lead is toxic, and that's a good thing.

(90,714 posts)Animals who were never shot themselves end up ingesting it and they sicken and die. Some of them, like the California condor, are at the brink of extinction. Others are not, but they still sicken and die.
Lead bullets are a holdover from the flintlock era, when a gun owner needed to make his own bullets and keep the powder in his powder horn dry. It's easy to melt lead down in a campfire or fireplace (try not to inhale the lead fumes) and you can re-use the bullets.
We don't use flintlocks anymore, and there are alternatives to lead that are not so dangerous to the environment.
Lead is poisonous. So is the NRA.

Oh and its old news too...from 2010...
They are a major polluter that has had a free hand pretending to monitor itself and failing poorly...
People are sick and dying from lead toxicity in the AIR WATER and SOIL...
They have been screwing with the EPA and been on the EPA's Radar since 2000...way before President Obama.

NOW from his own radical source trying to blame Obama the first paragraph explains WHY they are actually shutting down...
http://www.thenewamerican.com/usnews/constitution/item/16881-epa-closure-of-last-lead-smelting-plant-to-impact-ammunition-production
"The job cuts were expected. The plant, which has operated for more than a century and is the lone remaining lea"d smelter in the United States, announced in 2010 that it will cease operations at the end of this year.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency said the company made a business decision to shut down the smelter instead of installing pollution control technologies needed to reduce sulfur dioxide and lead emissions as required by the Clean Air Act."

Regulations making it harder to make guns and ammo would be a nice workaround to the NRAssholes in Congress.
