I hope the Pope gave him a lecture about illegal settlements

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu brought Pope Francis a copy of a book about the Spanish Inquisition when the two of them met on Monday, according to the Associated Press.
The book was written by the prime minister's late father, Ben-Zion Netanyahu. Netanyahu also gave the pope a silver menorah.
According to a description on Amazon, the elder Netanyahu's book argued the Inquisition "gave birth to an anti-Semitism based on race that would have terrible consequences for centuries to come."
Netanyahu inscribed the front page of the copy he gave to the pope, "To his Holiness Pope Franciscus, a great shepherd of our common heritage."

(75,480 posts)The real Inquisition is where torture techniques were refined that we even use today, water boarding being one of the more infamous ones.

(75,480 posts)covered, but this Catholic school girl (fifty years ago) was quite bored about it so I don't remember details. I do remember the Inquisition because I have Spanish ancestry and it caught my attention. A man who studied for the priesthood, especially a Jesuit, would be scholarly about Church history. That's my point.

(15,262 posts)Anti-Semitism is much older than the Inquisition and is based on religion, not race.

(5,739 posts)It is a very commonly a "race" thing for many people, including the greatest crime against the jewish people in history.

(15,262 posts)the perception of race by uneducated people. Second, what distinguished Jewish people from others if their religious tradition, one which does not exactly encourage marriage to outsiders.

(6,107 posts)I despise Netanyahu, but the lack of balance of posters on this site is also annoying.
Both sides do sucky things.

(51,907 posts)The sucky things the Palestinians do are analogous to kids kicking the front seats of the car because their parents (the ones with all the money and the drivers' licenses) are taking them to Auntie Em's in Kansas instead of to Disneyland. That's dangerous because it's distracting, but other than bawling and yelling and making their parents wish they had chosen Disneyland, what other options do powerless kids have?
Palestinians have no army, navy or air force. They have been stripped of land and water rights, and are utterly powerless to reverse that situation. If you've had everything that makes life mean something taken from you by an imperial power, suicide bombing and high school science project tin can rockets are about the only options you have.

(51,907 posts)Israel, with massive military power, practices the imperial terrorism of war. The Palestinians are utterly powerless in any way that matters--they can't get their land or water rights back, and they can't stop military attacks on their communities. Suicide bombing is the terrorism of the weak, and it's hardly a surprise that people will do it if you strip them of everything that means something to them.
