Really? We can't even knock on the neighbor's door anymore?

My God what are we becoming?

Our young men can't walk down the street in peace anymore for fear of being shot. Our sick and elderly can't knock on a stranger's door to ask for help.

All these stories have affected me more than I knew... I didn't really realize that until tonight.

I came home to find tire tracks through my front yard from my neighbors driveway. Obviously someone's car was blocked in by another of their cars and they needed to get out. Wiggled it out the side through my yard. Managed to drive right over some baby rose bushes.... they'll live.

So tonight I stood in my driveway fairly miffed. They aren't bad neighbors but we've had a steady diet of skirmishes over 20 years. Even for them this is fairly rude. But you know, no real harm done so just let it go....

But I also realized I'm afraid to go knock on the neighbor's door. Not just because I generally try very hard to avoid confrontations and ugly scenes. Also because it's after dark and little part of me wonders if the neighbor upping the ante on the rude-o-meter might shoot first and ask second.

It's time to ignore the news for awhile....

Thanks for letting me vent....

7. In the light of day ... I would ask for an explanation and ask them not to do it again.

I understand how you felt last night but your baby roses shouldn't be disturbed.

9. I'd sprinkle a box of roofing nails around my yard and their cars.

Iron is good for baby roses, I think. Make sure you get the areas around both front and rear tires.

I wouldn't trespass or risk a legal problem by putting nails around cars.

Just sayin'

neighborhood kids, always throwing roofing nails around. Look how many are in my yard! Gosh, I hope no one runs over them!"

You could bring it up with the neighbor during the daytime, but neighbor conflicts can be a real problem.

My next door neighbor and I share a driveway between our two houses. Double-wide driveways are relatively common in my neighborhood, and they can be a source of problems between neighbors. Driving around my neighborhood, I see some that have fences running up the middle of the driveway, evidence of an unresolved dispute between neighbors.

When my neighbor bought the house next to me, we had a discussion about the driveway and the need to be careful not to make it an issue. She has lots of family and friends who visit, and a couple of times I've come out to drive somewhere, only to find one of her guests' cars parked on my half of the driveway. I go knock on the door and ask that whoever owns the car come and move it. After that happened more than once, I talked to my neighbor again about the issue, and ask that she tell her guests that they not park on my half of the driveway. So far, it hasn't happened again.

My leverage on this is that I clear both halves of the driveway when there's snow. But, I'm sure someone will park and block my half again sometime. "I'm only here for a few minutes," is the usual excuse. My response is always, "Well, I need to leave during the few minutes you're parked there, so please move your car. You can park anywhere on the street."

These are folks who take a mile if given an inch. Gotta nip this quick or they'll be destroying half my yard in no time flat.

Thanks for your story and for the advice. Gives me an idea on where to start.... helps me feel brave. Sunday when we are all home I'll "woman up" and go over there.

Thanks MineralMan.
