only natural that Jay Ward would have property here.

Sadly, our moose population is declining at a frightening speed. Depsite our recent cold snap, one of the suspected culprits are the warmer, slightly shorter winters as well as somewhat warmer summers. I believe one theory is that the parasites moose pick up in the summer aren't dying off in the winter like they used to and are killing Bullwinkle's relatives.

As the cold front heads into the southern states, you know we'll end up with another Christmastime tornado outbreak. Lately, that seems to be the norm. It just won't get cold enough down here in the fall and winter to stop those, unfortunately.

At least the TOR:CON is not 4 or above for anyone in the next few days anyhow:
http://www.weather.com/news/tornado-torcon-index

When it starts pushing toward 3, though, there will most likely be some tornadoes somewhere. Let's just hope they won't be strong enough to do any damage or hurt anyone.

Was warmer yesterday. Got above freezing. Made the dirt road I live on very slippery. Took delivery of a new fridge today. Delivery truck got in okay. Road was slushy. It's going to get pretty cold again starting tomorrow.

This is going to be a tough winter, I suspect. There's been snow on the ground for two weeks already, unusual for normally moderate Michigan. We get lots of snow, but not usually until later. January is usually bitterly cold here with many consecutive days below zero Fahrenheit. That's when one keeps the hot chocolate and brandy handy, served together of course.

And I hate, hate, hate summer. I am in the Atlanta, GA, area, and for the past month, we have had some fairly cold temps. It has been in the 20s and 30s at night and the 40s in the day. But I am not complaining. I lived in Miami, FL, most of my life until I moved here to North Georgia and found there are four seasons instead of just constant summer.

But unfortunately, we do not get much snow. The last big snow was a blizzard in 1993. Other than that, what snow we do have does not accumulate for very long, except in the mountain areas.

A developing extratropical low pressure system over the North Atlantic, dubbed "Xaver" by the Free University of Berlin, is predicted to "bomb" into a potent storm with winds near hurricane force that will bring damaging winds and storm tides to the coasts of Germany, the Netherlands, and Denmark on Thursday. By Thursday night, Xaver's center will cross southern Sweden, and damaging winds from the storm will sweep the coasts of Poland, Lithuania, and southern Sweden. The center of the low will pass over southern Norway, bringing strong northwest winds that will funnel down the North Sea. The European model predicts that at 18 UTC on Thursday, winds on the west coast of Denmark will be sustained near 58 mph (93 kph). Xaver will be accompanied by intense thunderstorms capable of mixing the stronger winds occurring aloft down to the surface, and wind damage may rival that of October's Extratropical Storm "Christian" (AKA the St. Jude storm), which bottomed out at 968 mb. Christian killed 18, and did $1.4 billion in damage. There is a smaller chance that the wind damage from Xaver will approach that of Windstorm Anatol, which hit Denmark, Southwest Sweden, and Northern Germany on December 3, 1999. Anatol had sustained winds of up to 91 mph (146 kph), killed 20 people, and injured over 800. Damage was $2.6 billion (1999 dollars) in Denmark, making it the costliest disaster in Danish history.

I remember an Xmas back in the early eighties when it was -12 where I was, that wind chill made it feel like 30 below and people were dropping dead of heart attacks out trying to shovel the snow.

I guess those N. Dakotans must be used to such weather, but I still feel for them. Brrrrr!

How cold has it been in North Dakota with this blast of cold?

Cold enough for a skunk to freeze standing up on the side of the road.

86. Right now, 56 but cold is coming
Thu Dec 5, 2013, 01:58 AM
Dec 2013

I live near Pittsburgh; right now (almost 1 AM Eastern time) it is 56 degrees F. But Friday we expect snow, and then cold.

The rest of December is predicted to warm up slightly and average in the 30s and 40s, but January in Pittsburgh this year is predicted to be much below normal. I remain underemployed and I am terrified because of this. Although I do have a grant for some heating oil, with heating oil running near four dollars per gallon I only was able to get about 300 gallons. In a normal winter, with rooms closed off and heat set at 66 to 68, I need at least 400. If the winter turns really cold I will need 600 or so gallons. I have no funds to buy that much oil. And I cannot apply for another grant from this same source until next winter.

So in the meantime I have been keeping the heat at 62 to 64, but I have a low normal body temperature (my normal temperature is about 96.6.) Several times already I have had hypothermic episodes where my temp went down as low as 93.2 and I had a hard time bringing it back up, even under several blankets. I am seriously scared that I am going to become a statistic this winter when the oil runs out.

Please everyone, hope the forecast warms up at least a little and verifies warmer than what they are saying now!

Upper 20s to about 35 at night.

Just barely above the threshold where all the water pipes to the businesses which close during the wee hours can burst -- at least most of them. Some older buildings may have issues if it gets down to 27 or so outside.

But I like this sort of weather so much I would gladly take it for 8 months out of the year, rather than just 2 or 3.

since we're still above 30 but we're supposed to get snow later tonight.

We need it. An inch or two in the valley might mean a foot on the peaks.

But by Tuesday, it will be a high of 49 and a low of 39 in the morning. I am not complaining because I love cold weather. It is too warm right now.
