Here in my part of Colorado, it is about 2 degrees right now with a wind chill about -10 below zero.
I do not like this type of winter.

(28,078 posts)plus brutal wind chills, that 20 above has felt warm (and isnt' that sad?).
It's also when the ERs start seeing frostbite cases. We all know how to dress when it's really cold but when it "warms" to 20 it feels so good we get careless about gloves and hats.

Sadly, our moose population is declining at a frightening speed. Depsite our recent cold snap, one of the suspected culprits are the warmer, slightly shorter winters as well as somewhat warmer summers. I believe one theory is that the parasites moose pick up in the summer aren't dying off in the winter like they used to and are killing Bullwinkle's relatives.

seriously, the left coast of sunny Florida is a bit warm right now. We'll probably have to pay for it later in the from of a hurricane or tropical storm.

(38,187 posts)As the cold front heads into the southern states, you know we'll end up with another Christmastime tornado outbreak. Lately, that seems to be the norm. It just won't get cold enough down here in the fall and winter to stop those, unfortunately.
At least the TOR:CON is not 4 or above for anyone in the next few days anyhow:
http://www.weather.com/news/tornado-torcon-index
When it starts pushing toward 3, though, there will most likely be some tornadoes somewhere. Let's just hope they won't be strong enough to do any damage or hurt anyone.

This is going to be a tough winter, I suspect. There's been snow on the ground for two weeks already, unusual for normally moderate Michigan. We get lots of snow, but not usually until later. January is usually bitterly cold here with many consecutive days below zero Fahrenheit. That's when one keeps the hot chocolate and brandy handy, served together of course.

(30,947 posts)And I hate, hate, hate summer. I am in the Atlanta, GA, area, and for the past month, we have had some fairly cold temps. It has been in the 20s and 30s at night and the 40s in the day. But I am not complaining. I lived in Miami, FL, most of my life until I moved here to North Georgia and found there are four seasons instead of just constant summer.
But unfortunately, we do not get much snow. The last big snow was a blizzard in 1993. Other than that, what snow we do have does not accumulate for very long, except in the mountain areas.
AverageJoe90
(10,745 posts)Temps are supposed to really start dropping later on tonight, though; we won't get out of the 30s tomorrow and on Fri. we're liable to get a pretty good slurry of a wintry mix. Hopefully we don't have any long-lasting power outages, though.

(86,616 posts)the divide between ID and MT on the MT side at about 7K ft. It gets downright inclement around here sometimes. But I've got plenty of wood in here for the stove so all's good. There was a big power failure in eastern Idaho for most of the day and into part of MT. Didn't bother me 'cuz I have wood heat, no internet for half the day but oh, well... I can heat food and water on the stove so I guess I was in better shape than most since it only got up to about +3F today. Glad my fridge is well sealed, but I could have put stuff out in the outside locker (bear-safe) if it lasted a long time, though.

(3,301 posts)I live near Pittsburgh; right now (almost 1 AM Eastern time) it is 56 degrees F. But Friday we expect snow, and then cold.
The rest of December is predicted to warm up slightly and average in the 30s and 40s, but January in Pittsburgh this year is predicted to be much below normal. I remain underemployed and I am terrified because of this. Although I do have a grant for some heating oil, with heating oil running near four dollars per gallon I only was able to get about 300 gallons. In a normal winter, with rooms closed off and heat set at 66 to 68, I need at least 400. If the winter turns really cold I will need 600 or so gallons. I have no funds to buy that much oil. And I cannot apply for another grant from this same source until next winter.
So in the meantime I have been keeping the heat at 62 to 64, but I have a low normal body temperature (my normal temperature is about 96.6.) Several times already I have had hypothermic episodes where my temp went down as low as 93.2 and I had a hard time bringing it back up, even under several blankets. I am seriously scared that I am going to become a statistic this winter when the oil runs out.
Please everyone, hope the forecast warms up at least a little and verifies warmer than what they are saying now!
