Martin Bashir has resigned from MSNBC following weeks of controversy over his incendiary comments about Sarah Palin, he announced in an email posted by Mediaite on Wednesday.
"Upon further reflection, and after meeting with the president of MSNBC, I have tendered my resignation," the email read in part. "It is my sincere hope that all of my colleagues, at this special network, will be allowed to focus on the issues that matter without the distraction of myself or my ill-judged comments."
In a statement, MSNBC president Phil Griffin paid tribute to Bashir:
Martin Bashir resigned today, effective immediately. I understand his decision and I thank him for three great years with MSNBC. Martin is a good man and respected colleague we wish him only the best.
Bashir had been a host on the network since 2011, and had frequently raised eyebrows with his hyperbolic commentary. But his comments in November in response to remarks about slavery by Palin touched off a firestorm. Among other things, Bashir said that someone should defecate and urinate in Palin's mouth, a punishment delivered to some slaves. He apologized, but the comments continued to haunt him.
Bashir's resignation came shortly after Alec Baldwin parted ways with MSNBC over anti-gay comments he made towards a photographer. At the time, many wondered why Baldwin, who was suspended for two weeks for statements he made off the air, was seemingly being punished more than Bashir, who was not given any immediate suspension.
Bashir's departure leaves a hole in MSNBC's afternoon lineup. Leading candidates for the slot include MSNBC contributor and guest host Joy Reid, along with the recently hired Ronan Farrow. For the time being, Reid will fill in as a guest host.
Below, read Bashir's email in full:
After making an on-air apology, I asked for permission to take some additional time out around the Thanksgiving holiday.
Upon further reflection, and after meeting with the President of MSNBC, I have tendered my resignation. It is my sincere hope that all of my colleagues, at this special network, will be allowed to focus on the issues that matter without the distraction of myself or my ill-judged comments.
I deeply regret what was said, will endeavor to work hard at making constructive contributions in the future and will always have a deep appreciation for our viewers who are the smartest, most compassionate and discerning of all television audiences. I would also wish to express deepest gratitude to my immediate colleagues, and our contributors, all of whom have given so much of themselves to our broadcast.

Phil Griffin has fired so many of our voices. Phil Donahue. David Shuster. Keith Olbermann.
Who is next?
Why does Griffin not respect the wishes of his TARGET demographic: Liberals/Progressives?

(23,664 posts)Because I guarantee you that that is what Griffin is getting from the pro-Palin crowd.
If he gets a thousand reasonable emails from DU and other good Democrats and twenty semi literate emails from mouth breathers threatening him and his family, which ones do you think he will pay attention to.
Those who support Bashir will never lower themselves to the level of the wing nuts, and fear is a powerful motivator.
All you can hope for is that Griffin somehow grows a spine very quickly. I'm not holding my breath.

(23,664 posts)Personally I wish Bashir would have refused to resign and forced them to fire him, but then I suppose he was getting his share of threatening messages as well.
Unfortunately we won't get very far trying to appeal to the better angels of network suits like Phil Griffin.
SO i suppose we'll just keep trying. All I can threaten Griffin with is to quit watching his crappy network and I already did quit so it's really an empty threat.
I'll give it another try, maybe this time will be different.

(9,314 posts)Olbermann's attorneys were in negotiations with MSNBC for months before he left for him to get out of his contract. He had already been offered the spot at Current. He thought when Comcast entered into the ownership mix with NBC, he would be muzzled. That is why he wanted to leave. So many times as things have unraveled at MSNBC, I think about his thinking that and how right he was to want out. This is exactly the type of maneuver COMCAST pulls, and bottom line, they probably are thinking about how much they will save by substituting someone else at about one-third or less of what they were paying Bashir.
I really have enjoyed his show. That remark he made was a little over the top, but he is human and should have been allowed to take some time off and perhaps pay a fine. The quality of his delivery as a commentator is unmatched at MSNBC, and this is going to cost them in terms of viewership.
I used to have MSNBC playing non-stop at my house and have narrowed it down to only an hour or so. I think I am just going to boycott them altogether.

(7,759 posts)I love Al Jazeera news but have been pissed since they barred viewing Al jazeera English since Al Jazeera America hit the scene. I was tempted to subscribe since Soledad was there but didn't want to give Comcast anymore of my money. If Bashir is there I will reconsider.

(34,490 posts)I don't like Bashir. He's no good and deserve whatever reprimand that comes his way.

(24,096 posts)I had my sticky wicket moments with him in the past.
I'm curious why you would dislike him so much.

(64,933 posts)him if he had stayed. I don't watch television during the day, either because of work or outside interests, so unfortunately I would never have seen him on television.
