(1,389 posts)I have repeatedly advocated on this forum for the position that Bashir had nothing to apologize for. I must really think on this one as MSNBC has bitten the big one.

Goes to show that MSNBC would LOVE to be a second Fox "News" Channel if given half a chance, but since Keith Olbermann, they'll have a hard time trying.
Still, we Progressive and Liberals must support MSNBC in order to support Rachel Maddow, Joy-Ann Reid, Krystal Ball, Ari Melber, Toure, Big Ed, Chris Hayes, Al Sharpton, and last but never least, Lawrence O'Donnell. Keith worked hard and fought hard to make MSNBC a vehicle for more progressive voices, and I'm certain that the Execs are constantly itching to close down all their shows and replace them with, say, Mika.

(403 posts)supporting those you named is a good idea. I used to think that MSNBC stood for Mostly Stupid News for the Bush Campaign but they have swerved a little toward the center lately.

(959 posts)I am so sick of the management there firing their best talent because they have the audacity to speak the truth. Limpballs, Halperin, Joe Scar. say anything damn lie and vile comment and there are never ANY consequences. I have never gotten over Keith Olbermann, and the list just continues to grow. I am told that Time Warner in this area will be broadcasting Al Jazerra soon, and I think I'll take my business there. MSNBC is becoming a joke.

(62,325 posts)up when they do things like this the first time, they will definitely do it again.
BOYCOTT MSNBC. Without their Liberal audience they have NOTHING.
But people, even here, made excuses for them regarding Keith and everyone went on watching.
We're not very good at being loyal to those who stood up for us on the Left.
I have zero interest in MSNBC and now watch RT, where I get to see real Liberals allowed to talk about issues they cannot do on the Corporate Media. AND get REAL news even on the weekend. And I watch CCTV and use many other sources all of which are far more professional and factual regarding the actual news.
I am angry over this too, but it's not a surprise and all I can say is, if people continue to tune in after all of this, then they can expect it to happen again.
We have the power to change things, we don't have the will.

(15,438 posts)We can't forget that Keith Olbermann worked his behind off, and fought hard for, a progressive slice of the cable news stations.
Bloomberg, Fox "News" Channel, CNN, CNBC, and others are all pro-corporate and rarely report both sides of an important issue. The only widely-available place (which is still limited in most markets) where Progressives and Liberals can get their news to debunk the pro-Republican, pro-Corporate crap the other networks espouse, is MSNBC.
I'm certain the moment Liberals and Progressives boycott MSNBC, the Execs will quickly scrap the strong voices of Big Ed, Rachel Maddow, Chris Hayes, Karen Finney, Joy-Ann Reid, Al Sharpton, Toure, Krystal Ball, Ari Melber, etc. with the excuse that "Liberal media isn't cost-effective", and replace them with Halperins, Mikas, and other center-right to right talkingheads.
Yes, we have the power to change things, but if our voices are silenced altogether, who will hear us?
sabrina 1
(62,325 posts)but that is not the case anymore. There are many new media outlets that are not anti-liberal voices, not Corporate controlled where more and more people are getting their news now.
Until we get a Congress that is not Corporate controlled that will take back the media from the six Corps that own it, nothing is going to change, meantime I get my news from the New Media as do many, many other former MSM dependents. And they don't like it because their viewership is way down.
I want real news. We can't get that on the Corporate Media. And now we have alternatives.
BlueCaliDem
(15,438 posts)noses to spite our faces, and that's what you're, in essence, advocating.
I can't get Al Jazeera America because I have ATT-Uverse and they won't carry it. Time Warner won't, and neither will Verizon. The whole idea is to not give Righties and Corporate America bosses the very excuse they're looking for to shut down another avenue to spread the progressive view as far and as wide as we can. So I wholeheartedly disagree with you.
Whether we like it or not, MSNBC is the best we've got for now until Al Jazeera America can find a way to get into the mainstream. It took MSNBC years before it was recognized. You've got to remember that not everyone is as politically vigilant as you or I, and most get their politics on the fly. Also, most people still get their news from their local broadcasts or radio, and the news about Bashir's quitting as well as Rachel Maddow's hard-hitting pieces as she scolds the "beltway media" for their lack of common sense reporting helps get them and our message into the M$M. The more people hear about MSNBC's progressives, the more they're likely to come watch, the tinier the excuse for corporate execs to wrap up progressive voices and "try something new".

(23,668 posts)throw the baby out with the bath water. I have to pay extra to get MSNBC on my Comcast contract. I would have had to pay even more to get CURRENT when it was broadcasting and I don't expect Comcast to carry Al Jazeera America anytime soon. MSNBC with all it's faults still has some pretty damn good lefties/Progressives getting our message out and hitting back at FOX.
BlueCaliDem
(15,438 posts)how some Liberals and/or Progressives are always so ready to hurl the baby out with the bath water when they're upset.
I guess they don't understand that it's always better to have one bird in the hand rather than two in the bush.
MSNBC has plenty of faults. Plenty. But I don't want to lose the Liberals and Progressives that Keith Olbermann has paved the way for. He worked very hard, got a lot of flack, and negotiated with the Execs to get Rachel Maddow on and it's been great for us since. We're a better country for it. We can't afford to lose what little voice we have in the M$M by boycotting the only widely available cable channel there is.
sabrina 1
(62,325 posts)You need to check out actual news sources that are available to anyone who has a computer, all over the world.
Their success with Progressives came due to Keith Olberman. HE made them the progressives favorite media outlet and it was he who got Rachel the job she now has.
Back then there was not much else. You can get everything available with DISH eg, or any other satellite media outlet. I get all of them, Al Jazeera America, RT, CCTV, MSNBC, and don't have to pay anything extra.
But mostly like so many others right now, I use my computer to get news, real news. And the sources are endless.
Settling for second, third and in the case of the Corporate Media I believe they are way down there in terms of World News sources, gets us exactly what we have. Substandard programming. And we are satisfied with crumbs, which is what MSNBC is when compared to other news media now available to anyone who actually wants news.

BlueCaliDem
(15,438 posts)There'll be no more The Rachel Maddow Show. That's what I'm afraid of most.
No matter how much it pains us, we must continue to support MSNBC with our viewership or we'll be playing in their corporate exec's hands that "liberal shows are not cost-effective". That's the meme Keith Olbermann worked hard to kill before he showed that Liberal and Progressive shows are not only cost-effective, but they're profitable, too. That is his legacy to all Liberals and Progressives. Let's not botch it up.

(7,321 posts)I loved Rachel when she came on the air at first.
She was refreshing and she covered stories that often are given little notice, if any. However, even then she was often too silly, which I tolerated at first, and then her schtick started to annoy me, and then I noticed that she went on and on repeating silly metaphors over and over, I realized it was about filling up air time and got to the point I didn't even bother tuning in anymore. This during the time in my life when I still had Dish/Cable.
Then I made the decision to cut Cable and Dish Sat from my checking account altogether, and I find myself not even gravitating to her clips posted on DU or elsewhere. Did at first, but it was the same ole same ole so I rarely "click" on her or others vids.
Completely boycott them all, I say. starve the beast aka Korporate Media.

(15,438 posts)I live by the idiom, "better to have one bird in the hand than two in the bush". You and some others here apparently live by the opposite.
I will continue supporting Rachel Maddow, and I teach my group of young voters to do the same. I will keep Keith Olbermann's legacy alive any which way I can, and will continue to support MSNBC just as long as they continue to offer shows to Progressives and Liberals who fight to clear up the dreck M$M spout out each and every day.

(7,321 posts)sure they toss a couple of carrots now and then, but then they snatch it away the moment it gets real. That behavior shouldn't be supported, imo.

(193 posts)write to the boss, he will not do anything. It is the people who have to vote and get all of the TP's and others out of Government. The only way that corporations listen is when t heir bottom line is impacted, but the complainers, never follow through with boycotts of products they sell. We can still use all of the social media sites we use, and keep their names and deeds in the public eye, then, maybe, something will change, until then, we are just sp[itting into the wind, it means nothing.
sabrina 1
(62,325 posts)changes. Because it is Corporate Controlled. Boycotts work, but people don't have the will power to do what WOULD affect them, lose them money. Each time there has been a major boycott of media outlets, (there was one that stopped the showing of a right wing 'documentary' about Kerry just before the election eg, when their stocks began to go down, it works.
The people do have the power, the are just too apathetic to use it.

(14,807 posts)Rachel has started to bore me. Lawrence occasionally, too. But Martin was on his game every day. I never missed it, unless he had a guest host. His work puts Joy Reid to shame, even though I like her, the show has been one boring slog after another.
With Martin gone, I've stopped recording all the MSNBC shows. Hardly any reason to show up and watch without Martin.

(11,119 posts)Summer before last, I was watching Morning Joe while drinking my coffee. I stepped outside for just a few seconds to put my trash on the curb and when I came back into the house, Halperin (douchebag extraordinaire) was apologizing all over the place.
I was like, "Good grief! What the hell did I miss in that short amount of time?" Later when I visited DU, I found out what all the fuss was about. I think MSNBC suspended him for a week or ten days. And Morning Joe improved immensely during the time he was gone.....

(7,321 posts)Ya know, everytime I think I've heard and/or seen it all wrt to the M$M shill heads - they never fail to one up their disgusting outrageous factor.
I just saw Halperin as a NewsHour guest.. you know PBS. Can't remember the "topic". probably ACA. or something. I wonder why he felt justified calling O a dick. Obviously he felt he could get away with it, and he was right about that, he still gets invited on PBS News Hour for his "take" on all things Obama. sheesh.
thanks again..
