Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsWhy does it infuriate the rw'ers that we might feed the hungry and help the sick, or old?
And why does the only thing that angers them more than feeding the hungry, sick, or old is if they should get a free cell phone with a few minutes on it each month to stay in contact with the outside world that they've been all but cut off from? They will absolutely lose their minds when they mention all those free government cell phones that go out to people in need.
I love that the top bitches and moans from the "religious" rw'ers these days are reduced cost healthcare, food for the hungry, and assistance for the poor. The next time one of them complains about the "Christ" in Christmas, you tell them we'll put it back as soon as they put the "Christ" in Christian Conservative.
I'm pretty sure Jesus was pro healthcare, food, and help for the poor. Didn't someone write a book about that?

What do you mean it will be easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of Heaven.
As you treat the least among you, you treat me.

Nope, apparently Jesus said: "Raise the dead, restore sight to the blind? Sorry, pre-existing condition!"

Hell some of these self-righteous so-called CHRISTIAN fucks will claim to have seen the video of the "poor panhandler" driving off in his Mercedes-Audi-Rolls (depends on which definitely not staged video you see) and returning to his suburban castle...
I confessed to my wife yesterday that I still feel guilty for what I failed to do at work on Thanksgiving day. I had to remove a disruptive homeless man from the hospital. As we're walking, he is being respectful and understanding why I am escorting him out.
I thought to myself maybe I'd send him to the sidewalk for a minute then go to the cafeteria and buy a Thanksgiving meal for him.
Then as we reached the door, he became unruly again, cursing, demanding to know where he would get a turkey dinner. I removed him and did not get him a meal...Not very Christian of me.
I am not happy with what I failed to do. So I don't know why Christian conservatives are offended by the "least among us" and view homelessness and joblessness as a character flaw and not a sign of a decayed society.

(12,151 posts)First, people often perceive their own status as most important in relation to others -- so the more people worse off than they, the higher their own fortunes, in some way. That thing where people preferred making $50,000 a year when everyone makes $25,000 to everyone making $100,000 keeps coming to mind. It's a human psychological flaw, apparently. They'd actually rather see someone suffer needlessly to feel like they have more in comparison.
Second, the narrative has been pushed deliberate and consistently that the way society redistributes wealth unfairly benefits the poor and unfairly burdens the rich. The rich have been very busy creating "think tanks" and PR campaigns to ensure everyone gets that message. Their taxes get lower, their publicly funded bailouts get higher, and yet somehow, it's still the wealthy who get to complain.
So we live in a society that despises the poor, union workers, and public servants for supposedly getting more than they deserve, while the uber-rich are the over-taxed benefactors from which all good things flow.
I think that perception is suffering a little, and we all need to keep that going. OWS did a good thing with the "99%" meme, and Romney certainly helped it along by being the smug, pension-stealing, tax-sheltering ass that he is.
We just need to keep pushing back.

(80 posts)A lot of right wingers are hard working people who think that what is happening in this case is that the government is taking money from them that they worked hard for and giving it to someone who is too lazy to get a job.
It is up to us to convince them that this (mostly) isn't the case.
I say "mostly" because there will always be someone gaming the system, but we have to convince them that most people have a genuine need.

(5,105 posts)No. They want ALL of their tax dollars back, and screw everyone else. If they actually had to pay for things they use, like public safety, roads, clean water, food inspection, etc., individually, they'd soon go broke and/or die. But they're too stupid to realize that.

(9,463 posts)You see, it's as simple as this: There are good, compassionate people. And there are bad, evil, and uncaring people. The first group gives and cares unconditionally. The second bunch gives to, or cares about, only themselves and/or their own and are capable of all manner of trickery and shape-shifting to achieve their ends.

(10,164 posts)No, not in that way.
If they actually stuck to fundamental Christian principles (you know...like that Jesus feller advocated), they'd be falling all over themselves to render such assistance. Instead, they take a fundamentalist approach to "free market" economics, in which any such assistance in the public sector is just "big gummint interference." Their god is Mammon...and he's a jealous god.

(9,796 posts)I was going to write a lengthy post here, explaining all the psychological failings and tendancies that lead to this form of self-induced sociopathy but really, it all boils down to greed. They would rather people starve in the streets than pay a single penny more taxes. This also describes Libertarians.

(10,893 posts)because they don't want to pay more taxes, but even most RWers are not well off and wouldn't even be affected by a measly tax hike on the rich. I think they have mental problems if they're so concerned about how much someone gets taxed who makes way more money than they ever will.
AZ Progressive
(3,411 posts)Believe it or not, remember much of the Republican Party is made up of Conservative Protestants.
You have to know what Conservative Protestants believe in order to understand the Right Wing. Just treat the Right Wing as a foreign culture that needs to be learned.
Here are some examples of what Conservative Protestants believe that are relevant to this discussion:
http://www.beliefnet.com/Faiths/2001/06/What-Conservative-Protestants-Believe.aspx
"Salvation is granted by the grace of God alone, through faith in Jesus Christ alone as Lord and Savior--not through "works" such as moral behavior, good deeds, and generally not through sacraments. "
So being good is not important among conservative protestants.
"Many believe that suffering is God's design to test, teach, or strengthen belief in Him; the greater the suffering of innocent believers, the greater will be their reward after life. "
In other words, it's God's will that people suffer, because he's trying to test, teach, or strengthen their belief in him. If you help the hungry and sick, YOU are INTERFERING with God's will.
And you need to read about Calvinism and Predestination, one of the foundations of Conservative Protestantism.
Predestination was a concept by John Calvin in the 14th century that all events are willed by God. God has already chosen whether one is to have salvation or to be eternally damned. The only way one might know if they are to have salvation is to work hard and be successful, because for one to be successful and prosperous is God's will and one would only be prosperous if they were chosen by God for Salvation. Everyone else is one of the damned. See, if you believed in Calvinism, why would you help people who are suffering when they are likely one of the eternally damned to suffer punishment for their sins, because all events are willed by God?
Calvinism has largely been credited to America's "protestant work ethic" as said by Max Weber, who published an essay on this in 1904. Since Conservative Protestantism has been growing in dominance since the 70's (displacing mainline and liberal Protestantism), Calvinism is making a comeback as well:
