The more costly the jewelry, the bigger statement of greed and ostentatiousness it makes. The "important" thing is how much money it cost. These days, nothing less than 5 carat diamonds are of any interest.

Whether it's fake gold or silver their less than discrete stares tells me that they think that kind of shit is important to them.

But most of my 'statement' jewelry has been purchased from local craftspeople in Belize, Costa Rica, etc. etc. Bold chunky handmade necklaces, wood carved bracelets, etc. etc. and so on and so forth.

Other than that - I love sparkly jewelry. Love it. But I tend towards studs, one stone rings, etc. etc. Less is more with high quality metals and stones.

I like this, and if you don’t, it’s fine with me.

that the piece has some significance - historical, perhaps (made for an historical personage or similar) or artistic (designed by an acknowledged master in the field). Beyond that, I don't see jewelry as "important".

Statement pieces are pretty subjective, I think. Madonna probably considers her gold "grill" a statement piece - I consider it tacky and low-rent. The Hope Diamond is a statement piece, I guess, but to me it's an overly large rock on a chain of smaller rocks.

I have no idea what statement this jewelry is supposed to be making. I suppose Madonna thought she was showing how edgy she is - or something . . . and people who wear pieces like the Hope Diamond are probably trying to impress others with their wealth. I guess. Or maybe they really think that giant rocks are pretty.

I have a white chunky flower necklace that I bought for a statement piece. I consider it a statement piece because it is not exactly subtle. It was not important, but I liked it and bought it to match an outfit (under $20).

My other 'statement piece' jewelry that I wear (when the occasion is appropriate) is my vast collection of Democratic donkey lapel pins (only one at a time). One of them I bought at my state's convention, and immediately after putting it on, I get a compliment on it from Cory Booker. If that's not a statement, I don't know what is.

I love my earthy chunky necklaces and bangles I've bought from local artisans (to their country) over the years. And my favorite piece is a large copper bracelet my husband made me (he's a metal artist).

"My best friend gave this to me"

To the media, it just means "Someone just spent a bunch of money on this glittery, expensive rock".
