Carlsbad OKs e-cigarette ban. City says devices are toxic, lure youngsters to smoke.

CARLSBAD — The Carlsbad City Council voted unanimously Tuesday to ban electronic cigarettes in all places where ordinary smoking is prohibited, becoming the second local city to legislate against the increasingly popular devices.

Proponents of so-called “e-cigarettes” say they’re a cleaner and healthier alternative to tobacco cigarettes because users get nicotine without fire, ash, smoke or carbon monoxide. They also tout them as an effective tool to help smokers quit.

But Carlsbad city officials based their ban partly on a recent federal analysis that found vapors from e-cigarettes contain carcinogens, including nitrosamines and toxic chemicals such as diethylene glycol. The battery-powered devices look like cigarettes and heat up liquid nicotine solutions creating a vapor that users can inhale.

City officials said e-cigarettes can serve as a gateway to smoking conventional cigarettes for children, who are attracted to them because they come in a variety of colors and flavors such as cotton candy and root beer. “It’s a gateway device,” City Councilman Mark Packard said. “They’re clearly marketed to youth and children.”

Even if e-cigarrettes turn out to be safe, we still don't know they are. Much more research is needed.

The components they contain have been used in fog machines for years, and are approved for continuous exposure by the FDA. And have been. Years before the advent of eCigs. The ban is bullshit. As is the agenda by the OP.

PG, which is the base for almost all the e-juice you see out there is classified by the FDA as GRAS (generally recognized as safe). It's been around for a very long time and there's really been nothing to suggest it's dangerous. It's definitely MUCH healthier than smoking actual cigarettes. These bans are going to cause more people to die. It's ridiculously stupid.

I'm one of the few people with a sensitivity to PG so mine actually doesn't contain it. I order from a company that makes 100% VG smoke juice with all natural and organic ingredients. It tastes great too. I would not, however, use any smoke juice from China.

"These are indeed 100% VG, Organic, Naturally flavored, Home made, handbrewed, and full of love. They will work fantastically in your tank or cartomizer. We do use distilled, deionized water to thin our VG base in house, so while there is no propolyne glycol (PG) - they will still wick well, and move through an e-liquid tank just fine."

"All natural, organic, artisanal E-liquid - hand brewed in micro batches. Velvet Cloud is e-juice done right: no PG, no coloring, nothing artificial."

E-cigarettes helped me break a two-pack a day habit and helped my husband stop a pack a day habit. We're healthier and saving money.

And very few people have a problem with the PG like I do. I never could be anywhere near a fog machine either.

I'm amazed that there is so much resistance to e-cigs in this day and age. It is undoubtedly, 100% better for you than smoking real cigarettes. As a public health issue, shouldn't we be doing everything in our power to make it as easy as possible for traditional smokers to switch to e-cigs? Seeing as there's no second hand smoke to deal with, these bans just seem like assholery to me.
