My kid's youth group at church has sales and dinners with free will donations. They make a boatload-far more by donation than they would by straight price. Example: a ham and bean supper might have sold $6.00 tickets. When I attend I put in a ten-for myself only. The jar is always packed to the top with fives, tens, twenties, some fifties and even a few hundreds. A dinner that sold tickets for a set amount might make $1000 while a free will donation will easily clear $3000.

And she should be expected to get a permit, same as anyone else. I'd be pretty pissed if I had paid my permit and membership and had harvested mistletoe to sell in a stall yet saw someone else do it without putting out all that money. She's paying for braces, someone else who is a legitimate member might be using that money for bills, for groceries, etc. When they have the fundraiser dinners someone from the health department has to come out, inspect and license us for one-time use. It's not free-you pay for the inspection and for the license but that's what you have to do in order to make some money.

This story is idiotic at best.

An innocent, happy, healthy, pink-cheeked, well-fed, well educated, *well-trained*, white, well-clothed and cared for child.

Who isn't trying to survive and pay the costs of living. Or support a family.



The reason it's ok that your church youth group asks for donations is because that is under the auspices of God.

Does your youth group have a food permit and a commercial kitchen? Halon fire suppression and 2 million dollar liability insurance? Federal employee ID # or state room and meals tax? Are they meeting every requirement a non-church food service entity would have meet? Or just a bunch of lesser parasites?

The kitchen is a commercial kitchen and is staffed with members of the church who have food handler's permits. The kitchen is licensed every year and is inspected every time there is an event. We pay for the inspection, as per local ordinance, we play for the license, as per ordinance.

...courtesy of my wife the dentist. Yesterday, she was working on a 16-year old patient, who was told during his last appointment that he needs a root canal for one of his teeth. The cost is $1700 and it's an out-of-pocket expense. The family can't afford the cost outright so this teenager told my wife that he's in the process of getting a job so he can pay for the procedure himself.

my parents didn't think they could afford braces. I had cosmetic issues for sure but nothing really health related so I just waited until I got to college and had a decent part-time job. The dentist I went to offered payment plans and they were off by the time I left college.

As are all such stories. Those permits exist for a reason. If people don't like them, they can try to have them repealed, but quit acting like victims when the law is applied equally to all.

If this girl accepted the free membership I would ask why is it okay to accept a free membership, but not to ask for donations. He she believes asking for donations is begging why would she feel accepting a free membership is not begging. Also, piggy backing off Rude Pundit's point about this girl getting free mistletoe from an uncle, how is accepting free mistletoe from her uncle not a donation and based on her definition begging? In addition, if the parents of this girl and the girl herself wanted her to work to pay off her braces why didn't her dad take her out with the family lawn mower and let her mow lawns for a fee, let her bake cookies or cakes and then sell them. It seems to me those two things would have been closer to working to pay for her braces then selling free mistletoe from her uncle

No one told this girl to beg. She was told that because she did not have a permit she could not sell items in the market; however, she could not be prevented from asking for donations because that was classified as free speech. It seems that there should be some criticism of this girl and her family for not going through the proper process to get the permit. If she had followed the rules she would have been able to sell her items.

and even though it's a parasite, i wouldn't cut it because it's pretty poisonous. I hope she has a disclaimer on her pkg that says DO NOT EAT.
