Federal police and soldiers formed a cordon of several hundred yards around the highly radioactive container of cobalt-60, stolen earlier in the week in a carjacking as the material was being moved from a public hospital n the border town of Tijuana to a storage facility in central Mexico, news reports said.
The carjackers, who set off international alarm bells by absconding with the material, most likely had no idea what they were stealing and will probably die soon from exposure, Mexican authorities said at the end of a brief national scare.

Strange story, and it makes clear at the end, that the thieves will die soon from exposure because they opened up the sealed containers to take a look. The story explains how the truck was stolen, and why the authorities think the thieves didn't have an idea as to what they took...

(19,564 posts)I read earlier where if they had they would have been exposed to fatal levels of radiation, but it wasn't made clear as to if they knew if they had exposed themselves or not in the other article. They're going to die a horrific death as a result of their actions.
This is such a bizarre story, it reads almost like a "crime doesn't pay" fictional short story.

They seem like second level Darwin Award recipients.

(18,402 posts)many years ago (though certainly less dangerous!). It was probably around 1972, and we were participating in a ritual in my lower Manhattan apartment building--getting everyone in the building together to take down a wall between two rooms in one of the apartments. There were hammers and other implements and jugs of wine, and everyone would pitch in to knock down the wall piece by piece.
The women would pack the slabs of plaster and dust into empty boxes, and then the men would cart them down the stairs from a fourth-floor walkup and head off to find a dumpster on the street somewhere in which to (illegally) dump it.
Well, someone had just bought big stereo speakers, and these were some of the boxes we were using. Nice new Harmon-Kardon or some such boxes, giant ones (speakers were big back then!). The guys took these two unbelievably heavy, plaster-filled boxes down to the street and then came back up to get more boxes we were packing.
When they came down with the additional boxes, they were shocked to discover that the speaker boxes had disappeared--they'd been stolen! We laughed and laughed at the plight of these thieves, who must've thought they'd stolen some pretty cool stereo speakers. When they got them home (probably with hernias from the weight), they were going to be very surprised!
Okay, I just had to remember that story for myself. In the meantime, I'm very relieved they've found this radioactive material in Mexico. Whew.

(26,366 posts)PACHUCA, Mexico (AP) -- Federal police blocked access Friday to a central Mexico hospital where six people were reported to have been admitted with radiation exposure.
An official familiar with the case confirmed Mexican media reports that the six have been admitted to the general hospital in the city of Pachuca and may have been exposed to a stolen source of cobalt-60.
The official, who spoke Friday on condition of anonymity because she was not authorized to speak to the media, said only one person was dizzy and vomiting, which are symptoms of radiation poisoning.
