Bear mauling nets one euthanized bear. Maybe two if they catch another.

Bear caught, euthanized after attack on woman

Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission biologists caught a 200-pound bear in the Longwood neighborhood where a woman was injured by a bear Monday night.

The trapped female bear "closely fits the description of the animal that was involved" in the mauling of 54-year-old Susan Chalfant while she was walking her dogs Monday night.

In a statement from FWC spokeswoman Karen Parker, because the bear was caught late Wednesday —within 48 hours of the incident and near the area where the woman was injured, "the decision was made to euthanize the bear."

However, "We are not positively sure we got the right bear so we are going to continue to trap," Parker said. "If they capture another large bear, there's a good possibility it would be put down too."
