regressive laws by right wing state law makers by starting state level initiatives and referendums on issues the public supports. Issues like back ground checks on all firearm sales, expanded voting rights, protecting contraception rights and medical MJ. IF these came up for vote by the people, those rightwing groups, like the NRA, would have to waste their cash on those issues.

But of course we will have to do it without the organization and money of wealthy backers.

It fires up the wrong people (conservatives), doesn't fire up the right people (liberals), and the laws that are perpetually proposed don't save lives because they do not target the most common methods of murder and crime.

On private sales has majority support, even among gun owners and NRA members. Let the NRA and ALEC waste their money fighting against it, state by state.

Nothing wrong with universal background checks, but they have to be done in a fashion that is not de facto registration. Which shouldn't be a problem, but in light of the ongoing NSA/NRO datamining scandals, it can be a tough sell.

But consider the go-to gun legislation that is brought up time and time again.... bans on "assault weapons", expanding the (already arbitrary) definition of "assault weapon" to include more kinds of guns, and bans on magazine capacities.

95% of all homicides have a single victim, and the odds are pretty damn good that that victim was killed with one of the first 10 rounds in the gun. 2/3rds of homicides were done with handguns, many of which have inherent capacities of less than 10 rounds, yet the targets of legislation are "assault weapons" and >10 magazines.

No, the reason, the real reason, that "assault weapons" and >11 magazines are targeted is because of their association with RW militia types, even though at this point those very guns are now mainstream and selling like hotcakes to people that aren't running around in the Michigan wilderness wearing camo and masturbating to "The Turner Diaries".

the current system used for any retail sale that require BG checks and what would happen with private sales as far as the "registration" scare. I say let the voters decide this issue, state by state. You are just as likely to be a registered gun owner by the government of China by them buying or hacking the membership list of the NRA.
