She said to wish me a Happy Hannukkah. We are Irish Catholic but my mom's best friend is Jewish so Mom celebrates it every year by going to their house for dinner.

When I got back to my dorm, my RA called out "Hey, your mom says Happy Hannukkah". I just said thanks. Two girls I knew who lived in the dorm stopped what they were doing and looked at me. One girl said "You're not Jewish, are you?" The other girl said "She can't be, she's Irish". The first girl said with a relief "Oh good".

I wish that I had said something back to them.

When a child in the 50's, I used to stuff my mom's cards into their envelopes and lick the stamp. MANY of them said, "Happy Holidays!" I know this because my mother saved every card she ever received - from anyone. When she passed I went through her things and read many a holiday card from old friends that said "Happy Holidays!"
So, get the "f" over it.

There are some people who would scowl if I said that to them. So I just say "happy holidays" and sometimes I get the "look" and a rather loud "MERRY CHRISTMAS!" almost like a scolding...but I don't care to engage so I just smile and let it go...no sense in "dueling holidays."

But I find it pisses people off when you don't make a big fuss about their holiday greeting of choice. As a former practicing pagan, I always said "Thank you, and Bright Solstice to you, too." just like it was a normal thing. Yes, I go an evil look sometimes, but nobody pushed it.

Where I used to work, it became a thing that everybody who called ended with the have a blessed day thing. I always smiled (even over the phone, people can tell it) and said "Thanks! You too!", because I am blessed everyday, though not in the way they mean.

I had one young thing one year, obviously primed by her church to be obnoxious at the state-run institute of higher learning I worked at, wish me a Merry Christmas. The look on her face when all I said was, again "Thanks! You too!" in a happy, chirpy voice (and a huge grin) was worth all the biting of my tongue I had to do every day.

I've done it in Hobby Lobby, and other places where it was clear people were so-called Christians. I won't say Merry Christmas, but have been saying Happy Holidays since I've gone over to the non-believer side. ;D

The very best thing you can do to them is not give them a fight, especially in public. That's what they want, poor persecuted things that they are. Big smiles, greeting of choice in response, and walk away.

Just makes my day. <------ that's irony, or something.

When someone says merry christmas to me these days I feel that they are pushing it on me. Why not include them all in two words. I hope people have happy holidays. All of them or some of them. Like it or not Merry Christmas has gotten a bad name by the 24 hour news folks. I will stick with happy holiday and will answer. ....to each and all....Happy Holidays to you too!

However, if I know the person is some kind of "war on Xmas" nut, AND they say, "Merry Christmas" in some snarky, nasty way, I'll often reply, "And, a happy Festivus for the rest of us." Sincere wishes are fine, regardless of whether or not I share their beliefs, but if they're going to be assholes about it, I am not afraid to be one right back at them.
