Santorum: ‘It should be illegal to read off a teleprompter’

In Rick Santorum’s perspective, no presidential candidate should ever be allowed to use a teleprompter on the campaign trail.

The former Pennsylvania senator expressed his unorthodox view in his latest attack of the speech reading device Sunday afternoon, according to CNN. While campaigning at a restaurant in Gulfport, Mississippi, Santorum questioned the authenticity of any candidate using a teleprompter.

“See, I always believed that when you run for president of the United States, it should be illegal to read off a teleprompter,” he said. “Because all you’re doing is reading someone else’s words to people.”

He added: “You’re voting for someone who is going to be the leader of our government. It’s important for you to understand who that person is in their own words, see them, look them in the eye…hear what’s (in their) heart.”

or note cards, or (like Palin) your hand. How does he think politicians gave speeches before the teleprompter was invented?

All the teleprompter does is enable the speaker to deliver a speech without having to look down at written notes. It's not some magic thing that delivers somebody else's words to the speaker - it's THEIR OWN SPEECH, just not written on paper.

Now, when a candidate is wired with an earpiece like W. apparently was, that's a different story.

I'm sure some of the pols write a few of their own speeches. Besides rather it's on a telepromter or not, it's still written by someone else if someone else wrote it, isn't it?

Wouldda been a hoot to see Junior try and put two or three of his own words together to form a simple sentence. Junior struggled and sputtered enough trying in front of a microphone as it was.

Rick, you are an asshole of the highest order. A smarmy, hypocritical, unprincipled opportunist.

At book readings by authors, does this mean if they need a copy of the book to read from their own words,
the book was suddenly written by someone else?

Some people grasp at straws and hope to keep their heads above water.

Santorum grasps at a ladder in a dry, drained swimming pool and still manages to drown.
