ChicagoNow: Losing minorities and women, will the Republican party be around in 20 years?

I know I’m over-generalizing. But when you look at the evidence of how many different types of people Republicans have marginalized in two years, I question whether the party will be viable in another 20 years unless there is a major change in direction.

Through its policy initiatives and its fear of pulling back the fringe elements of its party, the Republican Party has rejected the outreach of minorities. They have gone after a major voting block in Latinos by demonizing illegal immigration and rejecting the DREAM Act; it has implicitly gone after blacks (not a block they had a chance at wooing in large numbers with Barack Obama as President) with its continued failure to stand up to "birthers," which many people, regardless of race, find not so veiled racist overtones.

A recent Fox News poll of 1,200 Latino voters underscores the Republican Party’s problems with the fast growing block of voters. The survey found that 60 percent of likely Latino voters believe that the Democrats will help them achieve the American Dream, while only 10 percent thought the Republican Party would do so. Democrats are winning over Latino voters with a 2-1 margin.

Couple its lack of outreach to minorities with its downright assault on women, the GOP really needs to look at whether it will be viable after another couple election cycles. Like Sarah Palin before him, Rick Santorum is unintentionally tearing the party up. Angrily tearing into the President calling him a snob because he wants all Americans to go to college, is two things: terribly off message when you have a flawed President and indicative of Santorum’s desire to keep people uneducated, ignorant, and dependent upon the "1%" Republicans feverishly woo.

There will be a party for the greedy oil patricians infesting the body politic.

They are excellent at marketing their swill.

We haven't seen the last of them by any stretch and they aren't losing hardly any money.

Also, some minorities are against Obama, too.

Nothing is for sure, it's all up for grabs.

followed through on that legit, honest plan from the mid-1990s to get more women and minority involvement in the party (remember that 1996 flirtation they had with Colin Powell for president? Back then it would have been difficult for me not to get behind it fully...)

But, the party veered 180 degrees in the other direction, and over the next 10 years weeded out all their moderates and level thinkers...

dysfunctional nature of our system, particularly the Senate, they will still influence the path of the government. With their attacks on voter rights, their time in power may be prolonged.

The demographics are clear. The Republican party's base is becoming a smaller percentage of the population while the Democratic party's base is growing.

I believe this is why they have been overextending. Their attempt to keep Latinos and African Americans from being able to vote is just one symptom of their fatal condition.

If the Democrats can win, and win big, in 2012 the Republican party may become insignificant even sooner. The party is so fractured already that serious loses could cause the separate factions to turn on each other and attempt to purge each other from their party.

If we can hold the White House, which I think is likely, and hold the Senate plus winning even a tiny majority in The House the Conservatives will lose it. It won't be easy and it very well might not happen, but if it does it could just be the breaking point.

for the past few yrs, the NY Times has had several articles related to this subject (specifically regarding anti-immigration)! And now with their attacks on women, they will be lucky if any woman votes for them!!!

Today, the NY Times had another excellent article where several republican women said they would rather vote for Obama than allow a republican President to determine their health options!!

So they've pretty much become the old-white-man's party!! The good news is, if they don't change their ways, they will have become a dying breed!!

Nothing to worry about. Republicans are going to lose the 2012 elections just like they did in 2008 because they had no viable candidate, much like we had in 2000 and 2004 with Gore and Edwards. Wow, were they awful, especially considering they were going against the stuttering idiot, GWB. Nevertheless, despite his failed promises from 2008, I think Obama will win in in 2012. If you listen to the Fox News agenda, they will say that you can't spend your way out of poverty. I say it is an investment for the future.
