Did Boehner attack the tea party because

the GOP nomination race in 2016? That would mean Christie, Rubio, Jeb Bush and Paul Ryan would split the traditional GOP vote while Ted Cruz would be way out ahead with all the tea party votes. So they just realized they have to. cut down in size the tea party beast in the next few months or it could grow in 2014.

he's just getting tired of the bullshit of teabaggery. Remember that he's old school and never much of a fan of those assholes.

And don't forget that the immediate problem is that the House is up for sale next year, and with an approval rating a bit less than gonorrhea he might be thinking how to save his ass, and maybe even the country with it.
