There are two novels that can transform a bookish 14-year-kld’s life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish daydream that can lead to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood in which large chunks of the day are spent inventing ways to make real life more like a fantasy novel. The other is a book about orcs.

Atlas Shrugged is a book worth reading. (any book that has a lot of influence is worth reading, regardless of whether or not you agree with it's message) I've read it twice. The first time when I was 19, and a second time when I was 39.

The first time I read it, I got totally into it. I felt like I'd found a basic truth. The second time I read it, I found it to be a silly work. It was basically Ayn Rand saying "here's how I wish things were, and it would work, if only everyone else felt the exact same way as i do"
