Watched Terminator 2 on the teevee this weekend and one thing in particular struck me as unrealistic

This is the toughest vehicle the cops brought to the Cyberdyne Systems building (kinda looks like a UPS truck):

So in fact, it was a realistic depiction of what a swat team would have.

I'm glad you found the autonomous robots, and liquid-metal-people-blender realistic.

Or the we have to go back in time naked 'cause you can't send non-organic material back in time, even though both the liquid metal T-1000 terminator and Arnold's T-800/T-850 character consisted almost entirely of non-organic material, yet that's ok 'cause we sent them back in the buff. We all know hydrogen nuclear fuel cells are organic... Right?

Or a that a 750+ pound Harley Davidson Fatboy frame can withstand a 15+ foot drop onto concrete with a 2,000 pound terminator sitting on it and not blow out both the suspension and tires.

I don't see how that could be true.

And Arnold went through time because his metal was "surrounded by living tissue" as Reese said forcefully to the psychologist. Not sure how metal-cop got through. But his metal sorta acts like its alive.

Hence all the damage he does when he lands on stuff. Also, how could he move such large objects, like cars. If he weighed similar to a human, and tried to slide a car out of the way, he would move, not the car. Also leverage. How can he pick up and hold something (like a coffin packed with about 1,000 pounds of guns, ammo and explosives) and not have to lean away to counter-balance. It's also mentioned in the DVD extras.

So on the time travel, if it is surrounded by living tissue it can go back in time... If I were Reese, I'd have butt smuggled a better gun back with me.

I only weigh about 150 (or did) and I could move 800 pound tubs of pudding. You plant your feet and you can slide some heavy stuff, even if you weigh much less.

A tiny five pound jack can lift part of a car off the ground. It's metal. It's strong.

Plus, if you put 2,000 pounds in the driver's seat of that van, wouldn't it be sagging a little bit on that side?

But, your 150, and your talking about moving 800. But you are also talking about leaning into it. How well would you fare if your had the strength but were attempting to move a 4,000 pound car? Odds are your feet would move, not the vehicle. Newton's 3rd law and all. How much force is needed to rip the front door off of a safe that is mounted in a concrete wall? He did not leverage himself against the wall, just one handed pulled it. Or drop-kicking an ambulance. Or when the all the EMTs could not budge, let alone lift him.

Absolutely the van would be sinking on that side. But that's why we call it Hollywood.

Sorry, I actually agree with your post. It is funny what we'll accept in our entertainment in order to hear a 'good story.'

I've had many of the same thoughts. I worked in Time and Frequency for many years, on atomic clocks, and I always get a kick out of how Hollywood can portray 'perfect timing' based on battery run wall clocks and peoples wind-up wrist watches. Young people today have no concept of real timing because their cell phones are linked to universal time standards.

for the part ... he had to smoke a few joints to get to where he could play the role somewhat (and that's being generous) convincingly ...

It's amphibious, can withstand up to Hurricane Category 4 force winds, and holds up to 13 people.

At least that's what they say.

They also mention how it is bullet resistant and other neat stuff.

We had a similar one in my neck of the woods that they dusted off. Strangely it says "rescue" as well.

They were going after another police officer that was having marital problems. Obviously.

Now WHERE have I seen that before?

The cops already know what this guy - remember, they don't know he's an invincible machine sent in from 65 years in the future - can do. They saw him tear the fuck out of a police station ten years ago, right?

If you were a SWAT commander, which would you send out to battle the fearsome and invincible Criminal At Large who you know is going to destroy anything you throw at it: the nice new Army vehicle you spent five years' budget allocation to get, or the old, shitty, barely-running bread truck the city council won't let you get rid of?
