Sarah Palin, ably staying in character in her new role as a professional media ambulance-chaser, was one of the first to rush to Robertson's defense. She posted a photo of herself with the Robertsons and tweeted the following:
Free speech is endangered species; those "intolerants" hatin' & taking on Duck Dynasty patriarch for voicing personal opinion take on us all
Conservatives have always had trouble grasping the difference between public censorship and private enterprise. With a few exceptions, like whistleblower laws and National Labor Relations Board protections against being fired for off-site discussions about work conditions (exceptions that, in almost every case, conservatives bitterly opposed), there is no legal or constitutional right to free speech on private property.
You can be fired for calling your boss a dick, and you can just as easily be let go by a profit-seeking media company for imperiling its relationship with advertisers. And incidentally, this is the way true conservatives, and especially true hardcore speech advocates, have always wanted it.

(360 posts)Before, people like Palin were only heard at family reunions and local events. They caught on quickly that Facebook and Twitter is a haven for like minded people all across the country.

(81,466 posts)too obviously, and plastic surgery won't help anymore? And when she no longer photographs well?
This is one woman who CLEARLY has always gotten by on her looks. There's no other way to explain it. People are naturally predisposed toward favoring the pretty. Especially those many of us who process information visually. There are almost too many studies that show this - in business, in psychology, in social exchanges, earning power, prestige, marriage potential, earning potential, EVERYTHING.

(7 posts)We expect Palin to stroll down idiot lane. She can't help it because she's an idiot. The same's the case with Glenn Beck. Neither one of them can claim to be anything other than a demagogic POS trying to enrich themselves by appealing to the baser instincts in humankind. The issue here is Ted Cruz, a potential GOP presidential contender in 2016 who's supposed to be smart. Here he is appealing to the Phil Robertson's among us even though as an Ivy League educated lawyer he knows that this clearly isn't a first amendment issue. The guy's not only a moral coward, he's a hypocrit.

(32,052 posts)Because those shows took politically incorrect takes on her life, like David Letterman's awkward Alex Rodriguez/Palin daughter joke (which was either pedophilia apologetics or just plain nasty depending on which daughter you were thinking about) or the Family Guy character cast as a child of Palin. I guess free speech is only free if it's at Sarah's convenience.

(2,529 posts)If you can find a recording of any speech she gave early in her term as mayor of Wasilla, listen to it. She sounds nothing like she does now, what with emphasizing "hatin'" and "workin'" and other verbs she drops her g's from. She never said "ya" instead of "you" and I think she just cynically employed a more folksy sounding persona when McCain chose her to be Vice-President, one that she thought might appeal to a Republican Southern base. When she goes out of her way to spell the way she talks, it makes me wonder.

(39,909 posts)A&E is a privately owned entity.
They can choose WHO and WHAT they want to represent them.
This is in no form or fashion a suppression of Free Speech.
Sarah Palin can NOT come in MY home and say whatever she wants to say without the consequences of being shown to the door. THAT is MY right.
The 1st Amendment prevent the GOVERNMENT from making laws interfering with the citizen's right to Free Speech
Last I heard, A&E was NOT a government agency.
Neither is MY home.
