Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsThank you, President Obama! We closed on our new HARP mortgage yesterday!
After a long time despairing over the costs involved in getting a mortgage with a better interest rate, we were contacted by Chase bank about getting the Home Affordable Refinance Program loan, if we qualified. Well, we found out we sure did! Not only did we get an excellent interest rate, we did so with NO closing costs. And the transaction was handled at our house, a great convenience since my husband has mobility issues. Yes, we had to provide lots of information and of course had to have our accountant look at the offer and give us the go-ahead. But it was worth it!
Now, the next time some republican tells me how awful Obama has been for this country or how the government can't do anything for people, I will be happy to tell them my story and let them ponder on it.

(131,105 posts)even tho Eddie is 200? miles away, in NJ! He slept 8 hours last night! (after they got a space heater, which I'd suggested they get. Gee, who knew babies like WARM! Who RAISED these kids???)
Julie is nearby, its 60+ degrees here and sunny, just lovely!
Very glad you've got some room to move, with new mortgage.

(63,912 posts)HARP loan closings. His opinion of them was POSITIVE, so we felt that we were getting a good deal. At this point in our lives we can't wrap our heads around moving to a more accessible home, but that day will come. I've made my peace with that and have stopped fretting.
Looking forward to Tuscany in late March!

(131,105 posts)Interesting when I learned, on my honeymoon, that Italians live close, in towns, and apartments, not much at all what we'd consider rural OR single-family.

May I ask how you found out about this loan program?

(3,033 posts)they sent us a letter. Actually, several letters, while I was doing the homework on it and hiring a real estate attorney. We had only 21 days to decide after the first letter. I'm not sure why they were in such a hurry, but it really worked out well for us. Applying was easy, all they used was credit reports. No pay stubs, no tax information, nothing but the credit reports. We closed in 2 weeks after the phone application. Easy. And no closing costs except for the attorney fee.

(63,912 posts)We had no expenses at all with this. Our accountant doesn't bill for this sort of thing and our attorney is for other real estate matters in a different state, but he is a RE lawyer and it was good to get his feedback on this!

(63,912 posts)It's a relief knowing you aren't falling victim to a scam. As I get older, I am more and more fearful of that sort of thing...this looked "too good to be true" which is why I immediately checked it out.
