When You Defend Phil Robertson, Here's What You're Really Defending

Reality.

1. Robertson thinks black Americans were treated just fine in the Jim Crow-era South, and that they were happy there. "I never, with my eyes, saw the mistreatment of any black person. Not once. Where we lived was all farmers. The blacks worked for the farmers. I hoed cotton with them. I’m with the blacks, because we’re white trash. We’re going across the field.... They’re singing and happy. I never heard one of them, one black person, say, ‘I tell you what: These doggone white people’—not a word!... Pre-entitlement, pre-welfare, you say: Were they happy? They were godly; they were happy; no one was singing the blues."

2. Robertson thinks the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor because they didn't believe in Jesus. "All you have to do is look at any society where there is no Jesus. I’ll give you four: Nazis, no Jesus. Look at their record. Uh, Shintos? They started this thing in Pearl Harbor. Any Jesus among them? None. Communists? None. Islamists? Zero. That’s eighty years of ideologies that have popped up where no Jesus was allowed among those four groups. Just look at the records as far as murder goes among those four groups."

3. Robertson hates gay people. Robertson in 2010: "Women with women, men with men, they committed indecent acts with one another, and they received in themselves the due penalty for their perversions. They’re full of murder, envy, strife, hatred. They are insolent, arrogant, God-haters. They are heartless, they are faithless, they are senseless, they are ruthless. They invent ways of doing evil."
snip--
Non-whites and non-Christians and gays keep getting the sense that, even setting aside policy, conservatives and Republicans just don't care for them. The "Duck Dynasty" episode, with Ted Cruz and others rushing out to defend Robertson's honor, is just another example of why.

Thank you, Phil, for helping us, through your clueless, ignorant hatred and bigotry, to expose conservatives for what they really are, and in the process, helping us destroy the hateful, racist, homophobic republican party forever.

No, it is not we that have deserted Christianity, it is those who came before us who deserted Christianity. We have only carried through a clear division between politics which have to do with terrestrial things, and religion, which must concern itself with the celestial sphere. There has been no interference with the doctrine (Lehre ) of the Confessions or with their religious freedom (Bekenntnisfreiheit ), nor will there be any such interference. On the contrary the State protects religion, though always on the one condition that religion will not be used as a cover for political ends....

National Socialism neither opposes the Church nor is it anti-religious, but on the contrary it stands on the ground of a real Christianity.... For their interests cannot fail to coincide with ours alike in our fight against the symptoms of degeneracy in the world of to-day, in our fight against a Bolshevist culture, against atheistic movement, against criminality, and in our struggle for a consciousness of a community in our national life... These are not anti-Christian, these are Christian principles! And I believe that if we should fail to follow these principles then we should to be able to point to our successes, for the result of our political battle is surely not unblest by God.

Dec 2013

Should DEFINITELY be rerun, ESPECIALLY now. Alex Haley's "Roots." A masterpiece. Eye-opening as all-get-out. And when it aired originally, it set off a huge chain reaction of discussion and a re-examination of the black experience in this country, illuminating what they went through, the punishment and mistreatment they endured, their struggle, their suffering, their anguish. It shed a light on the ordeal of slavery and what a blight it was on our history - a sin so tremendous and grievous that we are STILL paying for it as a nation and a society. For us in the white community, it gave us a vivid picture of what REALLY went on, far beyond the glossy veneer of "Gone with the Wind" and "Amos & Andy" and "The Jack Benny Program" where all blacks were presented as happy wise-cracking servants like the character Rochester. It was so mind-bending and riveting and joltingly educational. We need to see it again, and watch it again as a nation.

Hey, ABC-TV - you ran "Roots" the first time. And the ratings were absolutely boffo, too, btw. Why aren't you scheduling it again?

Celebrating the 35th anniversary of Roots, BET premiered the miniseries on a 3-day weekend showing in December 2012, which resulted in being seen by a total of 10.8 million viewers according to Nielsen ratings, and also became the #1 Roots telecast in cable television history. As for the BET network, it's 35th anniversary showing of Roots became it's best 'non-tentpole' weekend in the network's history.

For starters, he's gotten every Sunday talking heads show mentioning this "controversy". You can't buy that kind of advertising, even with all the money he and his family have made from this so-called reality show that is clearly as scripted as any sitcom I've ever watched.

The Robertsons have already penetrated the redneck market, this is a grab for those from the mushy middle who have never heard of them. I mean, look at the whole set up: Gentleman's Quarterly, which usually derives advertising revenue from high end clothiers, interviewing a man whose wardrobe comes from Army surplus stores. That was the first clue I had that this was all a fraud.

He's some dude who hunts ducks. This too shall pass, as will he. People like him will die eventually, and we should focus on molding more people into accepting people different from them. Zoom out to the point of view of some archaeologist 2000 years in the future, and they might say "while their ice caps were melting and pollution was destroying their habitat, they were concerned with internal strife and apparently with duck hunters with offensive ideas."

In other words, ignore assholes like this guy and let's spend our energy promoting good rather than fighting bad. Bad will always be here, and relishes being talked about. I think it's the best way. It's not worth our attention.

Sun Dec 22, 2013, 03:09 PM
Dec 2013

melting the icecaps, and destroying the habitat is still occurring on a mass scale.

From a republican conservative website that is supporting and defending Phil Robertson:

Radical Environmentalists Should Mind Their Own Business

The “Mind the Store” campaign, the latest initiative of a radical environmental organization, pressures the nation’s top ten largest retailers to remove products from store shelves that contain, in any amount, a list of one hundred chemicals the organization deems hazardous. Following the alarmism playbook, the organization claims these chemicals are linked to a variety of frightening health problems like hormone disruption, cancer, and birth defects despite the overwhelming body of scientific evidence to the contrary.

Alarmism about chemicals is nothing new. Environmental groups have long disseminated their exaggerated claims through the media to consumers in the hopes that Americans would be scared into altering their purchasing habits and would start demanding chemical-free products.

This strategy had some success. Bisphenol-A, a chemical used to make plastics more durable and to prevent bacterial contamination in canned food, is no longer used in certain products. Why? Not because BPA is unsafe—it has been used in products for over 60 years and has been declared safe by every major international health agency—but because faced with myriad looming state and local bans and restrictions on the chemical, manufacturers actually asked the FDA to ban its use in certain baby products. From the manufacturers’ standpoint, it’s far easier to face one outright ban of even this useful, perfectly safe and reliable chemical, than to try to comply with thousands of regulations.

Dec 2013

What is ironic is that they're surely not very 'conservative' when it comes to conserving our environment. Maybe if we could show that ducks might eventually go extinct or migrate permanently to better climates? Maybe then they'd care enough.

But arguing with/about people this bigoted is sort of a false equivalency. I don't think his unfounded views deserve discussion. They're backed by what? The views of roughly four separate Biblical authors from 2700-1800 years ago, who were writing it to support their own political needs at the time. A kinder view would consider it fairy tales, but that doesn't make it any more worthy of discussion.

I guess my point is we're mostly arguing with ourselves here. The other side will say "I believe what I believe, science and empathy be damned!" (or darned). They also believe A&E overstepped its bounds.. but I thought corporations are people and have first amendment rights too? What about poor A&E? The Republicans are mostly responsible for at-will hiring (right to work) but when it comes home to roost they whine. What it comes down to is this: Republicans tend to be selfish, Dems tend to be more society/community minded. Fighting such bigoted views just reinforces selfish people to think they must be right, since they are causing such a stir. They want to feel like they are persecuted, like their savior. War on Christmas etc. Why give it to them?

Sun Dec 22, 2013, 04:19 PM

the more alienated from the Republican party the majority of people, and voters, in this country become. Sure, straight white conservative bigots have come out in force to defend their hero, but as more is revealed about his hate and bigotry, the more all decent, rational people will distance themselves from him and his hateful, ignorant ugliness.

There are way more of us than there are of them, and bigots like Robertson will mobilize the majority to overwhelmingly vote ensure that republican bigots don't get into office. Most people who are members of minority groups, and all rational straight white men, understand that John Boehner, Sarah Palin, Ted Cruz, and the majority of republican voters believe exactly what Phil Robertson believes.

This country is no longer a straight white male conservative dystopia. Minorities are voting against the hate and prejudice of the Republican party in ever greater numbers. White liberals and rational white independents are scared shitless that the wacko, ignorant, superstitious hypocritical bigots who are like Robertson, and who are supporting Robertson, will get voted into office.

The hate, ignorance, racism, and bigotry expressed by Phil Robertson, and his biggest fan, Sarah Palin, represent the true, ugly heart and soul of the Republican Party.

I totally despise these "theoretical" humans who attempt to rewrite history....they should not be dignified with the term "revisionists" but rather should be called what they truly are...bald faced obscene liars....and if not that, then they should be considered extremely dangerously insane psychopaths presenting a clear and present danger to society and humanity. Sorry for the rant.

is his right to prove to all the world that he cherry picks Bible verses to support his prejudices. That is, to publicly make a fool of himself. And he can do that all he wants, until he starts telling somebody else what to do.
But as long as he is cherry picking Bible vesres, let's continue with that idea and ask him to answer these questions--

a) When I burn a bull on the altar as a sacrifice, I know it creates a pleasing odor for the Lord (Lev 1 ). The problem is my neighbors. They claim the odor is not pleasing to them. Should I smite them?
b) I would like to sell my daughter into slavery, as sanctioned in Exodus 21 . In this day and age, what do you think would be a fair price for her?
c) I know that I am allowed no contact with a woman while she is in her period of menstrual uncleanliness (Lev 15:19-24). The problem is, how do I tell? I have tried asking, but most women take offense.
d) Lev. 25:44 states that I may indeed possess slaves, both male and female, provided they are purchased from neighboring nations. A friend of mine claims that this applies to Mexicans, but not Canadians. Can you clarify? Why can’t I own Canadians?
e) I have a neighbor who insists on working on the Sabbath. Exodus 35:2 clearly states he should be put to death. Am I morally obligated to kill him myself?
f) A friend of mine feels that even though eating shellfish is an Abomination (Lev 11:10), it is a lesser abomination than homosexuality. I don’t agree. Can you settle this?
g) Lev 21:20 states that I may not approach the altar of God if I have a defect in my sight. I have to admit that I wear reading glasses. Does my vision have to be 20/20, or is there some wiggle room here?
h) Most of my male friends get their hair trimmed, including the hair around their temples, even though this is expressly forbidden by Lev 19:27. How should they die?
i) I know from Lev 11:6-8 that touching the skin of a dead pig makes me unclean, but may I still play football if I wear gloves?
j) My uncle has a farm. He violates Lev 19:19 by planting two different crops in the same field, as does his wife by wearing garments made of two different kinds of thread (cotton/polyester blend). He also tends to curse and blaspheme a lot. Is it really necessary that we go to all the trouble of getting the whole town together to stone them? (Lev 24:10-16) Couldn’t we just burn them to death at a private family affair like we do with people who sleep with their in-laws? (Lev. 20:14)

Standard answer is they are all Old Testament and were part of the OT covenant for Jews. The new convenant with Jesus abolished all of these.

76. and therein lies the rub
Mon Dec 23, 2013, 02:54 AM

If they say that, then they must do what Jesus tells his followers to do, like "this you do to the least of these, you do unto me". and the popular "Judge not".

Nothing Jesus said was anti gay, so they do not have a leg to prop up their homophobic bigotry anymore. I have had a couple try to squirm their way out of it, but for them, it all comes down to one thing alone - bigotry of their own making, and using their religion as an excuse.

I have a relative who long ago tried to spew that "gay agenda / gays are sinners / gays are sick" mess at me. I did not reply. I pulled out my checkbook and said, I'll give you $350 for your oldest daughter. Relative looked stunned so I said, "OK, I'll go to $400 and I will promise to take good care of her and just make her cook and clean and shop. And i will give her a small salary and a room of her own inside the house" She said "what?" So I said "well I would like to buy your daughter for a slave, as sanctioned in Exodus 21, and I think $400 is a fair price and you can even come and see her once a month, if you like. If you use the Bible to justify your dislike of gay people then you cannot cherry pick and ignore other passages, like this one in Exodus, which I will gladly invoke because I need some help". Relative never said a word to me about gays after that.

90. The New Testament can do just as well. Lets do Phil the Duck Guy, NT style....
Mon Dec 23, 2013, 12:53 PM
Dec 2013

Paul, the NT author who speaks against gay people says that it is a shame for a man to have long hair, such as Phil's. He forbids men from wearing any covering of their heads when doing religious rites of any kind, Phil often preaches wearing a headband. Paul says women, including Duck women, must never wear any costly clothing, jewlery, no braided hair, no sartorial attempt to highlight beauty. They are also to remain silent in public and never so much as question any man but their husbands, then only in private. Duck Women do not follow these rules and according to Paul that's the man's fault. Even if that man has shameful long unkempt hair affected as part of a marketing plan in spite of, you know, the rules of the religion he claims he's so devoted to. Can't even cut his hair the way the NT tells him to. Much less does he sell all he owns and give it to the poor as what's his Jesus ordered the rich to do.
Jesus who had nary a word of criticism for gay people forbade public prayer in no uncertain terms. Phil prays in public, on TV, you name it. He prays in public as part of his marketing plan, in fact. According to Jesus, only hypocrites pray outside the most private place they have. It's what he says. Jesus says Phil is a raging hypocrite to whom God does not bother to listen. Says it clearly.
I could do this all day. I could do a version for every bigot out there.

66. Regarding Robertson's leap of logic connecting bombings and belief in Jesus:

How does he explain the US's relentless bombings in Iraq?

And don't give me that crap that at the time we thought Iraq was involved in the 9/11 attacks.

Actually, Christianity has been connected to a lot of violence over history. Can you say Crusades?

Duck Dynasty never appealed to me from the get-go. I thought it looked like another phony "reality show" which turns out to be the case, with the recent revelations of the characters' actual backgrounds. Its appeal to so many Americans is another result of the dumbing down of America that accelerated in the 1980s.

youd have to be...
being as ignorant as he is.

if youre going to use the bible as your excuse as to your ignorance in other fields, at least know the damn bible...

lets not pretend ole phil was never a teenager and never ever touched himself thus committing adultery in his heart..

with people like phil tho, they just cant be content living in their own world and reality.. they feel the need to share it..
another trait the bible discourages... unwarranted pride and self righteousness.

he sits there making excess wealth off a show based on LIES AND DECEPTION of millions of people.. yet he has the nerve to call others sinners? please.

just another happy ignorant fool.

hope hes at least gaining something from all this (on an educational level).. I wont hold my breath..

ive always found it odd that the folks who thump the bible the most, seem to have the least understanding and grasp of the darn thing... altho it does itself say to watch out for false prophets eh ? lol

Mon Dec 23, 2013, 12:47 PM
Dec 2013

It could help them be a little bit less afraid, I suppose.

I have never in my life met one single happy person who lived in constant fear and confusion about everything that they saw as different from them, who blindly hated other people for no reason except their lack of understanding, a lack of understanding that is so often the product of fear and ignorance.

They are very sad human beings, and I can't help but feel sorry for them. But it is what it is, and reasonable people in every society are always faced with the constant chore of having to prevent ignorant, superstitious, fearful conservatives from deliberately harming innocent individuals, or large groups of innocent people who are are the undeserving target of their irrational hatred.

Spread love, eliminate hate.

.....if you even give one second thought about a contrived publicity stunt it's a waste of time and bandwidth. You've just given millions of dollars in free publicity to something pretty worthless in the general scheme of things.

Just another attention getter to boost ratings for an MSM total waste of time. They tried this because Britney Spears' barber wanted too much money to appear on the show and shave that ridiculous shrubbery off his head.

Better yet, just don't watch television at all.....

And those fun-filled wacky crusades were just AWESOME right?
I mean ostensibly they had them some serious JEEBUS right at the core. didn't they?

How well did that work out in the end?
Any infidels still living in the "holy" land?
Lasting peace in that region because of all the Jeebus they have?
Peace on earth and goodwill toward men because of the proximity to the creation of the plagiarized Jeebus myth?

I am sick and tired of people using the stolen myth of the resurrected savior god (in this case the Cosmic Jewish Zombie son of a carpenter) to justify their own fears and bigotry. I'd respect their opinions more if they just came right out and said:

"I am having a bit of a homosexual crisis in my life. I have found the irresistible lure of a penis to be too much to ignore lately and my fantasies are gaining a real need to act out physically. So, because of my latent fears and insecurities, I have found it necessary to lash out at those who may be very much like myself, only they have the courage to act on their desires and live openly in a world that rejects us. My cowardice is my own shame, but I use it to fuel my "passion" for the lord and as a cudgel to beat on people I secretly desire."

At least in that case I could empathize with their fear and hope to allay their self-loathing. But once they start citing Jeebus, its all down hill from there, with the usual cast of characters and bad actors coming center stage again...
