Why I Will Always Do My Grocery Shopping At MARKET BASKET Over Wal-Mart

http://nhlabornews.com/2013/12/why-i-will-always-do-my-grocery-shopping-at-market-basket-over-wal-mart/

By Matt Murray | December 22, 2013

Many New Englanders have been shopping at DeMoulas Market Basket for many, many years. They have always been known for their low prices and friendly staff.

Many years later Wal-mart got into the grocery store business and tried to undercut Market Basket. Since I have not been in a Wal-Mart in many years, I will assume that they are basically equal. There has always been one difference between the two stores, the people who work there, and how they are treated.

Both stores employ good hard working people. There is no question about that. The difference is how the people are treated. While cashing out at the new Market Basket in Bedford, NH today, I overheard a conversation between Mary (the cashier) and Mike (the bagger). Mary was bragging a little about how she just got a 25-cent raise. She was saying that the extra 25-cents does make a difference in her pay.

Being the friendly guy that I am joked that Warren Buffet’s millions started with just one penny too. (It may not be true, but the idea what really matters.)

He is usually around looking over how things are done and if, like me, you find something wrong, you just mention it to him and he has someone take care of it immediately. He just bought a second franchise, so I don't know if he will always be around, but his practices will be, He doesn't sell dented cans' cheaply, he donates them as well as any less than perfect fruits and vegetables. But he also donates a lot to the food bank. It doesn't hurt that I know the family and they are all pretty nice and do a lot of good for the town.

Yes, they hire people with disabilities and have baggers in every store (moves customers along as well). And people taking things to your car for you (don't have to hunt down carts)And some real great deals. Like in hay blocks and stuff.

Ugh... Market has the best prices in our area. I don't believe Walmart can compete here without temporarily undercutting their own profits. We'll stay with MB. All it will do is screw up traffic at the shared intersection and make our shopping commute harder.

in my case that would be Stop n Shop and the Food Co-op that i work at. My wife worked at the local Market Basket when she was a new mother and they let her have breastfeeding breaks which i thought was cool. We no longer live near a MB, but i have fond memories of strolling a cranky infant to the store and wheeling a sated smiley child back home.

K&R for good employers!

It is a 20 mile half hour drive one way. I wish they would build one closer to us.

that doesn't have a stoplight... or gas station... or restaurant... or convenience store. To get to my job (anywhere actually) is a 20 Mile/ half hour drive, so a Costco that close would be great. I have been tempted by the prices at BJs (my MIL is a member) and have shopped there, but try to limit it to technology/non food store stuff. And i live in the Northeast! I didn't know Costco was Union, or is it just some stores? We haven't yet finalized our contract, but we're working with Interest Based Bargaining and it's going well.

Cheers...

I find WinCo to be my favorite choice here in the Pacific Northwest. Lots of selection, particularly in bulk lot items, great prices, and most importantly to me, employee-owned. I'm also a huge fan of Costco, also largely for reasons of corporate ethics.
