I am inspired by perusing the latest issue of the New Yorker, which has a fascinating article on women now being able to work as lingerie sales ladies in Saudi Arabia and another article on this open source DIY-industry guy on a farm in Missouri, both of which might be edifying for segments of DU.
The New Yorker isn't a political journal, but it covers politics, both directly (as in election coverage and profiles of political figures) and indirectly (as in the Saudi Arabia story, or its reports from various conflictive lands).
I also pick stuff up in the New York Review of Books and the London Review of Books.
And sometimes Wired.
But I haven't looked at Mother Jones in years. Or the Progressive. Or In These Times.
I guess there's the Nation and the New Republic and the Atlantic, too.
And those more journal-like things, like Dissent and New Left Review. I haven't looked at those for ages, either.
What are people reading?

(36,055 posts)it without fail each week. A subscription to The New Yorker is an excellent investment.
Although The Baffler is not strictly political, it has good writers like David Graeber, Ken Silverstein, Susan Faludi, Thomas Frank, whose ideas on social politics, governance and policy making inform smart politics. http://thebaffler.com/current
Also, Foreign Policy, which is pricier than most subscriptions. http://www.foreignpolicy.com/

(13,184 posts)And Foreign Policy is another good one, though I think it is published by the Council on Foreign Affairs.

(34,170 posts)Back in the day I used to read that religiously. It was such a breathe of fresh air in the 1980s for me.
That was back when I aspired more than I do now.

(13,081 posts)I subscribe to that and Mother Jones, and usually read Slate and TNR online. Oh, and Texas Monthly, even though I haven't lived there since I was a kid 25 years ago.

And I read Mother Jones and the Nation for years, but not lately. Maybe I'm getting old, but they just seem so predictable.
Well, and I get caught up in my own little area of public policy and neglect the broader stuff. That, too.

Before the Voice bought them, they used to do some good reporting, but now it's just fluff too fluffy for the local news shows to run.
