(847 posts)Leaves a lot of room for discussion about who (or 'what') rapists are.

(5,938 posts)As I went to click on the OP, I was indignantly thinking to myself, "WTF?! There's only one goddam cause!"
Feeling better now that I've seen the graphic.

(324 posts)Many times it's a contributing factor in college life.
Jocks getting drunk and acting like asses ...no?
or am I missing something here
Mister Ed
(5,938 posts)Drunken rapists have. Sober rapists have, too. But alcohol? It's never raped anyone.
You just can't have a rape without a rapist.

(324 posts)What caused the robbery ? Can't have a robbery without a robber..
hunger maybe ? No
No it was a robber.............
You don't believe in contributing factors ever.
Mister Ed
(5,938 posts)...and I'm sincerely failing to.
I understand that the dire necessity of hunger could drive a man to rob, although he truly didn't want to. Like Jean Valjean stealing a loaf of bread in "Les Miserables", right?
But I do not understand what on this earth could make a person commit rape even though he truly didn't want to.

(324 posts)It 's not an excuse for the crime or any crime so please don't misinterpret what I'm saying.
I 'm saying that to not include alcohol in some portion of that graph when in fact many rapes
are committed in drink binge frat house parties is not an actual description .
It is a contributing factor involved numerous rapes .
Alcohol should be included in that graph.
There are in fact people who have committed crimes ( and convicted , rightly so ) under the influence who black out and don't even remember committing the crime.
Have you ever worked in a women's shelter ? When you talk to them the one thing they all seem to have in common
is their abuser was an alcoholic and most if not all incidents happened when he drank.
Mister Ed
(5,938 posts)...which was just a quick visual reminder that there is nothing about a rape victim that causes rape. (Not her alcohol consumption, not her clothing style, not her racial milieu, etc.)
Obviously, we both grasp that fundamental fact. Any discussion of the motivations and psychological makeup of a rapist is pretty much secondary to that.

(24,411 posts)...and I've never raped anyone.
Alcohol is used as an excuse. It's a copout.
This is the danger. I've sat down and spoken with my girls about the dangers of alcohol and being alone with guys at parties, where booze is around. This warning is because so many young men have been taught that alcohol is an excuse. They can say, "Well, I was drunk".
That's the danger. Alcohol is a contributing factor--but only because men who rape use it to justify their crimes.
Alcohol doesn't cause anyone to rape a woman--but rapists sure like to use it to rationalize and excuse away their sick, sadistic behavior.

(8,155 posts)And what causes rape to exist.
In each instance of sexual assault, the perpetrator is responsible. However, a necessary discussion must exist on the social and psychological mechanisms that promote rape.

Feel free to discuss that, and to explore the space of the evils that the ego causes anyone to do. Not that I'm trying to de-prioritize rape. Just something to maybe think about.
