Meri Jane Woods, 42, sparked the investigation last August when she strolled into a state police barracks in the town of Indiana to report her husband had sexually abused children, authorities said.
Woods, of Cherry Hill Township, also told investigators that her unidentified husband had downloaded several images of the abuse on their home computer.
But troopers soon found that all of the lewd files on the computer were installed just three days before Woods went to the police. The probe also found that Woods husband, Matthew Woods, had moved out of the home the month before.

She's not only facing charges relating to the child porn, but she's facing 40 counts of lying to the police.
Well, the divorce should be pretty easy now...
The Straight Story
(48,121 posts)He is probably guilty of something else. (yes, that is sarcasm - but there is a good chance some are indeed thinking that)
Either way, that sort of accusation sticks with someone, even when found innocent. Name gets in the paper, it spreads doubts among people which may make it harder to find employment, housing, etc.
I saw inmates night after night and certainly not all of them were convicted. For whatever reason charges might be dropped. But some crimes you remember and associate with the person anyway (you hear snide remarks from inmates and other deputies that the person will be caught eventually for something else, etc).
Coming down hard on people who lie about such crimes would hopefully reduce the urge to do so.

(110,159 posts)threat of violence. it should read, man scorned. can we put this old and tired away?
within the family circle, previous research indicates that in roughly half the cases the
victim is likely to be the spouse of the offender (Wallace 1986). In their examination
of incarcerated women who had killed their spouses or boyfriends, Bacon and
Lansdowne (1982) reported that in fourteen of the sixteen cases the woman had been
assaulted by the male she was subsequently accused of killing. Thus, the violence of
such women can be viewed as both reactive and defensive. Consistent with this view
is the finding of Wallace that:
Women killed their husbands against a background of violence; they killed in
response to and because of violence perpetrated by their husband on them and/or
other members of their family (Wallace 1986, p. 108).

And yes, women and men scorned are capable of horrible things. I was working in the bar not too long ago and saw a woman at closing time slam the door shut on her own shoulder. After a few of us looked at each other with, wth, she came back up to the bar and asked us to call the cops to report her boyfriend's abuse. Apparently they'd just broken up. We didn't call.

(27,670 posts)he was innocent, and we proved it before he was charged. I knew the woman who accused him, and she was borderline sociopathic. It was a vengeance accusation. I recorded a conversation in the home of the woman's best friend, that could not be used as evidence in court, but the judge said he would listen to the recording in his chambers. When the judge came out of his chambers, he was red faced furious, and very severely admonished the woman. My friend (who is gay, btw), went to the sheriff's office and tried to press charges against the woman, but the deputies refused, saying that it would cause others to be afraid to come forward with similar allegations if charges were filed. My friend was so crushed, drained, and devastated by these events that he did not have the will to pursue it any further, he just wanted it over.
This whole episode lasted several months, and the poor guy could not believe what was happening to him. He did nothing wrong, and there was not a shred of evidence against him except the woman's testimony. This destroyed my friends life for a long time. He lost most of his "friends", and was afraid that everyone would still think he might be a sexual predator. He went bankrupt from paying legal fees to the lawyer who worked on the case, became depressed, began using cocaine to combat the depression, got busted for selling 3 grams of coke, and ended up doing 1 1/2 years in state prison.
After he got out of prison, he did his probation thing, and moved away, and never returned. He's doing ok now, we are still in contact a few times a year, but his life was permanently and considerably altered by this incident.
I still have the original recording, it's as damning as damning can be; it was definitely as set up, and there have been times when I've actually considered putting it on youtube, but I do not want to bring this ghost of nightmares past back on my friend.
I have played the recording for some of our mutual friends, the few who stood by my friend all the way. The women cried when they heard it, the men wanted blood.
True story, and with more details it becomes unbelievable, how horribly an innocent person be alleged to have committed a crime, yet have no evidence against them except the words of a sociopathic monster, and then have their life ruined in so many ways by the justice system, in a heartbeat.
And you know what he said to me after it was all over?
"No one ever even apologized."

Within a few days the employer drug tested everyone and 12 people failed, fired immediately. The coworker got arrested on some drug charges and his ex got arrested for filing a false police report on the porn. That one bad breakup caused a huge shitstorm.

A callout. One of many for this poster. Make it stop.
You served on a randomly-selected Jury of DU members which reviewed this post. The review was completed at Fri Dec 27, 2013, 03:13 PM, and the Jury voted 3-3 to LEAVE IT.
Juror #1 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE and said: Christ. Transparency Pages are shared all over this board. Hardly a hideable "offense."
Juror #2 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE and said: Callouts aren't against the rules any more. DU operates on transparency, and if a transparency page is visible there's nothing wrong with linking to it. The way people can avoid having their bad behavior not highlighted is to not say things (like calling posters "douchebag" that result in hidden posts. LEAVE.
Juror #3 voted to HIDE IT and said: No explanation given
Juror #4 voted to HIDE IT and said: No explanation given
Juror #5 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE and said: Y'know, some of us are getting really tired of the petty, juvenile bullshit that seems to have infected much of DU lately. I've reached the point where the call-outs, the mud-slinging, the generally infantile behavior seem just as bad on one side of an issue as on another. It's as if y'all are just tryin' to get each other tombstoned, and I didn't think that was the intent of DU. Both of you -- all of you?? -- need to go stand in a corner for a while. And maybe you'll stand there long enough to grow up a little.

You're just dragging in the last few days/weeks into this thread. Seriously...
I've been around since 2004 for what it's worth.

(12,778 posts)Shouldn't anyone making a false report to police be charged? I mean, it's not like there is a benign motive behind it.

That's why I was thinking (hoping) it might be an ill attempt at sarcasm.

(10,624 posts)It's a shame that child porn is so easy to come by. Otherwise, it would *not* be so easy to frame someone in this fashion.

(12,778 posts)I don't think this will ever go to trial. I predict that she will take a plea offered by the DA. Any halfway competent attorney could tell her just how devastating the sentence might be from a jury.

(28,498 posts)She was in possession of child pornography. She had to have it to download on the computer.
Doesn't that make her a pedophile, and, as such, subject to laws banning child pornography?
Will she be required to register as a "sex offender?"

(6,342 posts)But...look at the evidence. They can prove the images were uploaded when the husband no longer lived in the home. And they can prove she was in possession of the computer when they were uploaded. So she's kind of screwed.
The forensic evidene in this is strong.
But I dont think this ever goes to trial. This will be a plea deal. A jury and a judge would hammer her if it went to trial.

(6,342 posts)But that is only half the battle. Then the problem might be proving the person did it, especially if it was a stranger. People have been released from prison after DNA proves they didnt commit the crime. That's not saying the woman lied about being raped, it is saying she accidentally identified the wrong person.
But ultimately, the law outlines what has to be proven for someone to be convicted. That's all part of the jury instructions.
And yes, I talk extensively about "innocence until proven guilty" all the time in lots of cases. I mentioned it over and over again during the Zimmerman trial (and called a racist by some for doing so). And I told people the same thing during the Casey Anthony trial (and was called crazy for doing so).
And btw, studies show when women are accused of a crime, they have a higher chance of getting their charges dropped than a man does. She also, if convicted, would usually serve a lesser setence than a man would. She'll also get sweeter plea deals. Patriarchy is the reason for that by the way. If feminism is successful, women would be going to prison longer because the stereotyps and gender roles is a big part of the reason the system goes easier on female defendants.
