Complete story at: http://omg.yahoo.com/news/msnbc-host-makes-fun-mitt-romney-black-grandson-023826137.html
One of these things is not like the others, one of these things just isnt the same, panelist Pia Glenn offered as a caption for the photo, which the Romneys tweeted on Christmas Eve. (Lyrics of the original Sesame Street song are, One of these things just doesnt belong.)
And that little baby, front and center, would be the one, Glenn said.
Comedian Dean Obeidallah joked that the baby is a token.
I have no love of the Romney's. Between the 47% comment, the offshore bank accounts, and "Stop it! This is hard!", I have no reason to believe they'd have been anything other than a disaster in the White House. That said, they are a racially blended family. There is nothing shameful or wrong with that, and I don't think they should be made ffun of for that reason.
On edit: I've now seen the segment. As I state downthread, I don't feel it was malicious, but also feel they should have stayed away from the whole "one of these things is not like the other" aspect.
Update: As several downthread have commented. Melissa Harris Perry has apologized to the Romneys. So, no "Shame on MSNBC" -- just a dumb remark, which she admitted was dumb and apologized.

(43,049 posts)the family for having a black kid. It was, actually, all in fun with no malice intended.
Best line-- "Looks like the Republican Party."

(10,000 posts)IMO, the kids are (in the political sense) non combatants. Leave em alone.

(10,000 posts)The Obamas campaigned with Sasha and Malia in-tow, but have made clear (in particular -- Michelle has made clear) that the press is to keep their distance -- which for the most part, they have done. Chelsea Clinton is a target now because she is a grown woman in the public spotlight. As a child in the White House, she stayed largely out of the public eye. Ditto the Bush girls until they chose to become public figures. Untiil this child is of age to become a public figure, comments should pretty much be limited to "isn't he adoreable."
WowSeriously
(343 posts)Back during the Clinton years. He was unkind to Chelsea.
Certainly if their only appearances are on stage at conventions or primary victory celebrations, then fine.
But if the children make their way to campain liturature or commercials to showcase what an All American family looks like, then the die is cast as far as I am concerned.

You just don't use the race of an adopted kid for laughs. Kids are off-limits as far as I'm concerned.

Surrogacy or private adoptions can sometimes go very awry..especially with super-wealthy families that could be extorted.
In any case, that little kid will be very lucky to have privilege, and will surely have a good life..so the end result is good

(1,989 posts)Beneath the quality of a Melissa Harris Perry show.
Mitt Romney is a walking joke. Adopted babies aren't useful pawns for making jabs at useless politicians. She used poor judgement. She should have anticipated that most reasonable people consider children off limits.
Mitt Romney didn't adopt this child. His son and his son's wife did. Typically, it takes a special kind of person to adopt a child, IMHO. It takes a schmuck to turn it into a cheap joke.
She simply didn't need to do it. It was unnecessary. And, it wasn't funny to me. Adoption is something to be encouraged. People who decide to adopt children from different backgrounds often have a real challenges ahead of them. It isn't something most people take lightly. In fact, you're often automatically placed in a unique group of people who the world gives permission to turn around and stare at when you spend time together as a family. What did her show do? They did exactly that on a grand scale. We could say Romney did it when he tweeted a picture of his family for the holidays. Oh...but the matching khaki family usually tweets a photo. So, it should've been a routine thing when this photo turned up. Since as liberals, this is supposedly the world we want. One in which, neither color nor gender gets a double take.
I'm in a multiracial family. In fact, so is Melissa Harris Perry. The fact that Mitt Romney happens to be in a sucky political party that has only bad ideas shouldn't mean that now his new grandson is fodder for jokes...justified because hey, it was "funny". And, since Mitt Romney's a republican, its acceptable.
In fact, here's another picture Melissa Harris Perry could have asked a caption for.
Most multiracial families want the world to see them simply as a family. These children's mother didn't run for President. Heck, it's not unusual for other family members to not even share the same politics as their spouses, parents, in-laws, etc. Although, that shouldn't even be relevant in this current situation.
As I said...tacky. I don't think she expected it to go this far. I'm sure it wasn't her intent. But, yeah, I found it offensive.

(849 posts)I somehow doubt that they would make fun of Sandra Bullocks adopted child in the same manner.
Children should never be political or comedic fodder for trashy entertainment yuks.

(32,026 posts)This is mindless click-on-me, click-on-me crap from Yahoo which often mirrors articles from The Blaze or Daily Caller (but this one was from an entertainment site LA Wrap). The click-on-me article has misleading content most of the time. This panel that MHP had seems to be a comedic look at the year in political news. And one of the panelists (Dean Obedeliah I think) had a darkly comedic but valid point about the "diversity of the Republican Party" in talking about the photo. You'll hear much worse on Fox News.
And that article has 3000+ comments. Of course let me bring out the internet political comment generator:
"libtards"
"MHP is a bitch"
"Liberals are sooooo tolerant"
"libs are racist"
Yep there's gotta be a cycle of all that in the comments! Really though it is HARD defending MSNBC to right wingers who'll NEVER change their minds.

(1,989 posts)Melissa Harris Perry has apologized. Her apology was classy and hopefully will put this to rest quickly. And, to my mind, when people realize their own behavior is indefensible, I need not waste my time or effort trying to defend it.

(19,348 posts)"Regardless of my personal opinion, this is at least a defensible position. A person may or may not find something offensive, regardless of the objective fact that it offended others, and so not see the need for disciplinary action. Many instead invoked Robertsons free speech rights. This is an untenable position from any angle. No one was sanctioned by the government, so no rights were violated. However, A&E also has free speech rights, employer rights, and contract rights, which precious few conservatives stood up for at the time.
It became even more clear Monday how transparent some of these arguments were. On MSNBC, Melissa Harris Perry and her shows panel made fun of a family portrait of Mitt Romney and all his grandchildren, including an adopted infant who happens to be black. Twitter was set ablaze. Within hours, Fox News hosts were questioning her ongoing employment, and the RNCs Communications Director directly called for her suspension. Im guessing these people had a different opinion about Phil Robertsons situation. Previous examples of this disparate treatment include Martin Bashir and the Dixie Chicks."
