And don't forget his warning us against the "military industrial complex".

Actually, I'm old enough to remember stuff from that election. My uncles favored Douglas MacArthur, and I went with my family to hear Robert A. Taft, another hopeful, speak at the local movie theater in my small home town in northern Wisconsin.

The "Working Man's Party" I joined in the 60s ( FDR's New Deal, LBJ's Great Society)
is gone. The only Senator that even reminds me of the Democratic Party of the 60s is Bernie Sanders,
and he is an "Independent".

Elizabeth Warren is reawakening the old memories.
She sure sounds like an old time Working Class Democrat,
but I'll need to see more,
and whether the Party will rally behind her.
My cynical prediction is that the conservative DLC Party Establishment, while paying her lip service in public (because of her popular support) will Wellstone/Feingold her to the fringes,
and not help in her re-elections.

Certainly any suggestion we might be spending too much on defense due to monied interests would be denigrated as "impractical" by much of our party today.

It's been a multi faceted assault by the righties since the days of Nixon's racially coded "Southern Strategy". They went after everything with a multi faceted plan, creating think tanks to populate talk shows, going with Ailes "GOPTV" idea from 1968 with Fox News, consolidation of media so Rush is booming from 100's of channels coast to coast. All of this was set forth in the famous early 70's call to arms memo by Lewis Powell. It works because we have enough sheep in this country who won't or can't do their homework about their personal situations.
