Dec. 31 (UPI) -- MSNBC host Melissa Harris-Perry apologized after a segment poking fun at the Romney family, which earlier this year welcomed an adopted baby grandson.
Sunday's Melissa Harris-Perry show featured "photos of the year," which included the family photo released by the Romneys that "a lot of people had emotions about."
....
One of these things is not like the others, one of these things just isnt the same, Glenn said. And that little baby, front and center, would be the one."
"I think this picture is great, added Obeidallah. It really sums up the diversity of the Republican party, the RNC. At the convention, they find the one black person.

Good.
Ranchemp.
(1,991 posts)but she never should have said it in the first place.
CTyankee
(63,912 posts)went off the train tracks. MHP didn't think this through, didn't consider the pitfalls in mentioning the whole adoption thing at the outset. Why say it? We all know that the Republican Party is horrible on race issues, so it serves no purpose to take it to this level, a very personal, family one.

(1,991 posts)This should have never been brought up in the first place, it gave the repubs another talking point to bash liberals.
It seems that we like to pull defeat from the jaws of victory too often.

Or, maybe I misheard something and she actually took part in it... Let me know if I did.

(63,912 posts)I just thought it was probably best that she not get into a discussion about it in the first place. I happen to like MHP. I think she goes into good stuff on her show most of the time. Of course, this is all hindsight on our parts here. And, I think most of us have had those moments where we say "Oof! I shouldn't have said that!" Accompanied by a

(10,942 posts)they are certainly stupid. The choice between the two Presidential candidates couldn't have been clearer. On one side was a President who had led well in the face is racist, angry, senseless opposition. On the other side was a man who had only showed that he could become richer than he was born, flip-flopped on everything, failed to take any stand that demonstrated that he had a moral compass. Mitt Romney may be a decent person, I don't know him, but Presidential candidate Mitt Romney was a core-less, slimy coward.

(10,164 posts)They could have voted for a third party candidate (possibly an actual progressive...)...or just not voted for president at all.
In states where the race wasn't going to be close (and given our annoying retention of the obsolete Electoral College), liberal voters were free to express their disappointment in the administration without risk of helping the GOP.

(10,362 posts)It's a pity that you can't recognize making an intelligent statement vs. self-defeating silly antics.
Then again, your arguments on this forum amount to piss-poor strawmen, so it's not surprising to find you using this tactic again in this thread.

I watched the show and there was nothing mean spirited at all about the segment with the baby photo. And Ms Perry herself never said anything even remotely mocking in tone.
LittleBlue
(10,362 posts)it was Megyn Kelly showing a photo of Malia and her white friends, for the purposes of mocking her color compared to them?
Of course you wouldn't. Because the reason for the joke is a child's race, which is despicable.
brush
(53,784 posts)Pls don't take right wing talking points as gospel. There was no mocking, no mean spiritedness towards the child. A joke was made about repug "whiteness", which is kinda true since that party is 95% white and seeming to like it like that.

(96 posts)how the most recent two MSNBC hosts that have had to issue apologies are people of color? Meanwhile, the bigoted white guy on Duck Dynasty can make homophobic remarks and say that people of color were happy during Jim Crow making more money laughing to the bank. I am so sick of this double standard.
I watched the segment and MHP didn't make any derogatory remarks. Her guests are the ones that went off the rails a bit during the discussion. If we held all of the "Fixed Noise" programs to the same standards, they would need an apology template on speed-dial. I am a African-American female and to have MHP bring up issues that I don't hear anyone else discuss on a national broadcast is a breath of fresh air. She also brings on people of color that can get no other platform to speak their truth. I sincerely hope there are no forced "vacations" or resignations by MHP.

Likely empathetic to anyone encircled by a swarm of outraged conservatives, Fox News Channel's lonely liberal Alan Colmes rushed to the defense of embattled MSNBC host Melissa Harris-Perry on Tuesday.
Colmes used his blog to dispute the notion that Harris-Perry was mocking Mitt Romney's black grandson, Kieran, during a segment over the weekend.
The mockery, Colmes pointed out, was directed at the GOP not Kieran Romney.
During the segment, two of Harris-Perry's guests made jokes after a photo of the Romney clan was shown on screen. Comedian Dean Obeidallah said the photo "really sums up the diversity of the Republican Party," while actress Pia Glenn sang "one of these things is not like the other."
As Colmes noted, Harris-Perry actually called the Romney grandson "gorgeous."
"Nevertheless, the media, particularly the right-wing media, reported that the panel made fun of the baby, which isnt what happened," Colmes wrote.
Harris-Perry apologized for the segment on Tuesday but said she "meant no offense."
"Melissa Harris-Perry is apologizing for something that she didnt do wrong," Colmes wrote.
