Melissa Harris-Perry apologizes for mocking Romney's black grandchild

Dec. 31 (UPI) -- MSNBC host Melissa Harris-Perry apologized after a segment poking fun at the Romney family, which earlier this year welcomed an adopted baby grandson.

Sunday's Melissa Harris-Perry show featured "photos of the year," which included the family photo released by the Romneys that "a lot of people had emotions about."

....

“One of these things is not like the others, one of these things just isn’t the same,” Glenn said. “And that little baby, front and center, would be the one."

"I think this picture is great,” added Obeidallah. “It really sums up the diversity of the Republican party, the RNC. At the convention, they find the one black person.”

On one side was a President who had led well in the face is racist, angry, senseless opposition. On the other side was a man who had only showed that he could become richer than he was born, flip-flopped on everything, failed to take any stand that demonstrated that he had a moral compass. Mitt Romney may be a decent person, I don't know him, but Presidential candidate Mitt Romney was a core-less, slimy coward.

how the most recent two MSNBC hosts that have had to issue apologies are people of color? Meanwhile, the bigoted white guy on Duck Dynasty can make homophobic remarks and say that people of color were happy during Jim Crow making more money laughing to the bank. I am so sick of this double standard.

I watched the segment and MHP didn't make any derogatory remarks. Her guests are the ones that went off the rails a bit during the discussion. If we held all of the "Fixed Noise" programs to the same standards, they would need an apology template on speed-dial. I am a African-American female and to have MHP bring up issues that I don't hear anyone else discuss on a national broadcast is a breath of fresh air. She also brings on people of color that can get no other platform to speak their truth. I sincerely hope there are no forced "vacations" or resignations by MHP.

I am glad that MHP apologize but I do not think that she was making fun of the baby. The fact that Scott Brown is one of the idiots pushing this story is really stupid. Brown is the wrong person to be making these charges.

Colmes makes some good points http://talkingpointsmemo.com/livewire/alan-colmes-melissa-harris-perry-apology-mitt-romney-black-grandson-kieran

Likely empathetic to anyone encircled by a swarm of outraged conservatives, Fox News Channel's lonely liberal Alan Colmes rushed to the defense of embattled MSNBC host Melissa Harris-Perry on Tuesday.

Colmes used his blog to dispute the notion that Harris-Perry was mocking Mitt Romney's black grandson, Kieran, during a segment over the weekend.

The mockery, Colmes pointed out, was directed at the GOP — not Kieran Romney.

During the segment, two of Harris-Perry's guests made jokes after a photo of the Romney clan was shown on screen. Comedian Dean Obeidallah said the photo "really sums up the diversity of the Republican Party," while actress Pia Glenn sang "one of these things is not like the other."

As Colmes noted, Harris-Perry actually called the Romney grandson "gorgeous."

"Nevertheless, the media, particularly the right-wing media, reported that the panel made fun of the baby, which isn’t what happened," Colmes wrote.

Harris-Perry apologized for the segment on Tuesday but said she "meant no offense."

"Melissa Harris-Perry is apologizing for something that she didn’t do wrong," Colmes wrote.
