I was finishing cutting the grass in my yard and went ahead and cut in a neighboring property, in what is supposed to be another street but hasnt been built. I do this to get a larger green area as a private park. I was finishing off and it was almost dark when I noticed a plastic box, the kind that is used to carry pets. Since it is a public place and people cut through this easement, sometimes they litter and I usually pick it up to throw it in the garbage.
I kept on cutting until I wasnt able to see much in the dark and almost walked away without picking up that box.
When I got closer, I confirmed it was one of those pet cages, and since it was sideways, I grabbed it by the handle on its side and lifted it. My surprise was when I righted it, it felt like it had something inside, so I looked and Ill be darned! I could see in the dark a furry little doggy sitting silently. Wow, I couldnt believe someone could have been such a monster to leave this doggy inside this cage to die! That cage had not been settled there it had been thrown from afar.
Who could throw her away?
She Was So Afraid
I brought the cage to my new backyard room. The dog was so weak, she could hardly stand up. Who knows how many days she had spent inside the box dying slowly in silence without water or food (the next day, it rained heavily. If I hadnt found her, perhaps she wouldnt have made it).

(60,347 posts)I just don't understand how anyone can treat an animal like that leaving them to die, the dog was helpless. Until saved by a kind dog humanitarian.

She kept the cat - the most amazing animal - smart, litter trained, goes on daily walks without a leash! He's VERY devoted to my daughter. Thanks for sharing this!

(2,033 posts)I've witnessed and experienced a lot of very bad shit in my life, stuff that sends me into panicked PSTD flare ups if I think about any of it too much...
And about the only thing that makes me feel weak, completely despairing, and just...useless...against the constant onrush of such ruthless and relentless evil, is that incidents like this continue unabated on humanity's watch over this planet...I mean, come on...we cannot even manage to protect our animal companions from such terrible acts, let alone each other...shit...wtf, man...
Dogs are humanity's oldest, best, and perhaps only, true friend on this planet, loyal and innocent partners, who we seem to perpetually take for granted, who suffer so often and so cruelly at our hands...
40,000 years or more, dogs have been our companions, they have contributed to shaping our civilizations and cultures, and have certainly influenced our evolution - and still so many of us just hatefully spend them like worthless coin...
Damn, I fucking hate this...
I hope the asshole(s) who did this suffer a similar fate...

(7,581 posts)Many shelters have "holding pens" for when the pound is closed. It is like a mail slot - you put the dog, puppies or cat/kittens in, and dump them down a chute. I am not making this up. Might be a raging dog in there, and people don't care - they just dump their animals in.
And I agree - it is no coincidence that this happens in a place where Republicans rule the day.

(7,648 posts)I lived next door to an animal shelter in NJ. People would occasionally drop pets off in the middle of the night- some in carriers, some not.

(7,581 posts)My point is that there is a real disregard for animal life in rural America, but especially the south. I have done dog rescue for 5 years, and the dogs and puppies and pregnant moms come from the south to NJ and NY. We tend to think of dogs as family members and if you don't, your neighbor will rat you out. That was my point. Not that it doesn't happen elsewhere.

(22,308 posts)I took in an older dog that had been abandoned (among others) and although she was not locked in a box she was in such bad shape she also could barely stand or walk.
When I got her home she I was able to hand feed her a few kibbles of dry dog food (my dogs always get dry food). I mean 3 tiny little pebbles of food. About 20 minutes later she ate another 8 or 10. 20 minutes after that 20 or so.
I ended up calling her "Granny" because she was in such bad shape I thought she was very very old. I was wrong. I had her for over 8 years and she loved me like no other pet I have ever had. Even at the dog park she would always keep track of where I was and she never got to far away.
I expect this animal will adore him the same way Granny adored me. Yes, that dog was very luck he found her but I think he will learn that he was also very lucky to have found her.
P.S. Very Cute!

(398 posts)people drop off babies at sanctuary locations: their economic conditions have made their living situation incongruent to owning a pet.
We can blame the pet owner for getting rid of the dog in such a heinous way, but we can also blame the 1%'ers who made life so much more difficult for those in such straits that they have to make the tough decision of abandoning a pet.
Could they have dropped the pet off at an animal shelter? Probably, but that may have be a more certain death for the pet than leaving it in the field.

(4,507 posts)I post this here because it is obvious that so many of you love animals - and yet this post, about poor, lost, nearly hopeless animals seems to keep sinking like a stone: http://www.democraticunderground.com/1002425840
(It's about a petition begging the Japanese government to let animal rescue groups do their work in the exclusion zone)
Closer to the topic of this thread, on primary day in Allentown, Pennsylvania (2008), a volunteer found a cardboard box that had been similarly "discarded" - she found a live, thirsty, starving little kitten; unfortunately two of her siblings had passed away in that box.
We rescued the kitten and over the course of the day watched it make an amazing recovery - one of the volunteers adopted the kitten who was named "Bama," in honor of the day he was found.

(719 posts)I mean, I'm happy that the dog was found, but reading about something like this makes me want to hurt someone physically. I've wondered what I woud do if I ever came upon something like this in the act of abandonment, and I honestly do not know how I'd react to the perpetrator.
It scares me a little.

(14,350 posts)A neighbor kid and her friend were walking a couple of streets over when a car drove up, pulled over, and a cat came flying out. The girls ran up and asked the people what on earth they were doing. The people told the girls that the cat didn't get along with their new chihuahua and that she could live here now; then, they drove off.
The neighbor girl tried to hide her at her house where they can't have cats, but her mom found out, put her in the garage and kept her fed, and then she followed my daughter home one day. Patches is the sweetest little thing, just plain adorable, funny, and amazing. We are so blessed and just can't understand why anyone would dump her.
People who dump animals like that have lost a lot of their humanity, sadly.
