choice of calling the office stating that after her second client she would be going home and cancelling her 3rd client. not because she is being rude but the roads are bad. Leaving her second client the car fishtailed. She also told me that a co-worker called and told her she watched as a car went sideways down one of the main roads (It is on a steep hill.) The road was closed and traffic diverted.
Rumor is that somehow our city ran out of salt and it is borrowing from Penndot. The use of salt is spare.
They are just clearing main roads and around the schools and can't keep up with that.
Stay safe.

(14,947 posts)-1 but feels like -18. Husband has to have an MRI about 15 miles away. The roads look slick and there's this hill that terrifies me.
Rock salt is good until the temps get like this, then calcium chloride is a possible solution. Unfortunately it is 3 times as expensive and really puts a strain on highway budgets. The first week of January and I am already so sick of winter!

(31,902 posts)Where abouts are you in PA? I'm about 10/15 miles from the PA border in NJ. We have not received anything yet.
However, my mom was SUPPOSED to drive back from our house this morning to Rochester NY and has decided to just stay put until Saturday. Just wondering if you are along 81, 15, in Bucks County, out in the Western side of the state . . .

(26,291 posts)A tanker truck full of hazardous materials has over turned and exploded, just east of Flint, in Davison Township. They are creating an evacuation zone, and telling people anywhere near the area to stay in their homes, doors and windows closed and not to let their pets out. I-69 is completely shut down for the next 12 hours, at least.
It has now been two straight weeks of snow, sleet, wind, rain, you name it. I really don't ever remember such an extended period of horrible winter weather.
Keep safe, people!

(73,622 posts)I live in rural, upstate New York. While I definitely prefer the warm summer months, I am able to make the best of it in times like these. My driveway is a long section of an old turnpike -- the second in this county, which was just beyond the "western front" at the time of the Revolutionary War. It turns into a beautiful dirt road, which in times past went to Ithaca.
In the late 1700s - early 1800s, my house was a stage coach station. Upstairs was the township's first post office, along with a doctor's office. I like to think about what life was like back then, when the winter weather was similar to this. The central chimney, which has three fireplaces and a Dutch oven, must have had roaring flames to keep folks warm.
Outside, it is absolutely silent today. I hobbled out to my pond, with sunflower seeds, to fill the bird-feeders. But I didn't see any birds.
Later tonight, my youngest daughter and I will bring our youngest dog out to play. Rocky is half-Husky, half-German Shepherd. He absolutely loves this weather. He is a tumbling clown in the deep snow, jumping around in a manner similar to the cartoon character Tigger.
Then, we'll come inside, make some popcorn, and watch the movie "Rob Roy." She remembered that I love the film, and bought me a new copy for New Years.
And I'll try not to think about my heating bill ......

(20,176 posts)He cancelled all his deliveries past 8PM last night because of the weather and closed early because the dining room was dead. Then he almost lost the car coming home. Going uphill, he lost traction, found himself fishtailed then backwards and sliding down the hill towards the turn at the bottom and the telephone pole. Said he ended up in someone's front yard as he slid past the pole by about 2'.
I told him he needs to send that guy a fruit basket or a pie. He gnawed the fuck out of the guy's lawn getting the car out.

(3,724 posts)They use liquid calcium chloride or liquid magnesium chloride on the roads. In very rural areas, they can supplement this with anti-skid materials like small stones mixed with sand.
