For Christ's sake, Florida

Today, the Tampa Bay Times broke the news that the St. Petersburg's First Friday block party has been canceled because of bitterly cold weather.

Temperatures in the area are plummeting... all the way down to a low of 45.

"Because of the cold weather, tonight's First Friday St. Pete event has been canceled," the city of Tampa Bay wrote on its Facebook page.

Meanwhile, in Minneapolis, PETA-supporting ladies wearing lettuce bikinis did their thing on the Nicollet Mall yesterday while temperatures were about 50 degrees colder than they will be in Florida tonight.

If it hits 45 degrees here anytime soon, you can bet patios will open and people will take to the streets and trails as though they've been locked up inside for years. But in Florida, everything shuts down.

We don't know whether we should pound our chests in commemoration of our Minnesotan toughness, or move, to be honest.

that they are indeed objectifying women. It's curious why they don't ever have half-naked men at their protests.

Wouldn't listen, but I would enjoy the eye candy.

They have no clue what it is like.

My daughter has lived in Tampa area for several years and says she wants to move back north. I told her she needs to spend a week here when it was below zero.

do not even think of buying a home on the water or in an area where there might be a "flood" sometime in the future.

Also bring a bunch of cash to pay for homeowners insurance on top of flood insurance.

Other than that, I think it's cold right now. After being here 37 years my fingers are freezing just trying to type this message.

now allows for 20% increases per year in flood insurance premiums, or if the home is being sold an automatic 100% increase.

It's turning into a real problem with the home sale market.

I'm sorry, I just saw that you live here in sunny Tampa Bay area. you already understand all that.

Now I have moved to north Florida

I grew up in the Northeast Ohio and remember many cold days some with below zero degrees Fahrenheit nights.

One Christmas I journeyed back to Ohio to visit relatives. There was snow on the ground and the temperature was in the twenties or high teens. I only had a light jacket but I spent a lot of time walking around the little cities of Ashtabula and Conneaut and didn't really feel all that cold. The residents were wearing far heavier coats than I was and they did look like they were suffering. I actually enjoyed the weather.

For some odd reason, to me it feels colder in Florida when the temperature dips into the 40s than it did in Ohio. Right now at 6:15 pm the temperature outside is 39 degrees and will drop to 31 tonight. The Weather Channel is predicting a high of 51 and low of 23 on next Monday and a high of 38 and a low of 27 on Tuesday. Afterward we will warm up considerably. Saturday Jan 11 is predicted to have a high of 72 and a low of 51.

I will admit that you guys up north are plenty tough to withstand the LONG winters. We get a few cold days and than the weather turns nice. I'm glad I live here.

Today's windy 40's seems colder to me than when I was walking around snowy Chicago a few days ago.

Right now the relative humidity where I live is 55 percent and I am 149 feet above sea level.

Chicago sits at 579 feet above sea level but the current relative humidity is 65 percent.

I'm not sure if this proves anything.
