(16,199 posts)Its hard on the furnace, but it maintained 68 without much difficulty. The worst part was shoveling snow on Friday. It was 10°F outside with a 15MPH constant breeze. Had to cover my entire face for that.
Texasgal
(17,045 posts)When we get a cold snap here the heat gets turned to atleast 70! Do you have a fireplace or other heat source?
I am just clueless about extreme cold weather.
NutmegYankee
(16,199 posts)I have electric space heaters if I need to warm a room and I have a Kerosene heater as an emergency heat source. The fireplace isn't very useful for heat. I also have a generator in case I lose power in a storm.
You get used to a cooler thermostat setting. Basically the house will remain that temp for 5 to 6 months of the year. Only in the summer do I float with the temps. No AC.

(12,659 posts)We will get down to 42 degrees Sunday morning. I feel for everyone who is getting affected by this storm.

What do people do? Is the city shut down? Can you go outside at all?
MineralMan
(146,317 posts)Schools are closed on Monday, but that's it. We go outside. I have clothing that's good to -50. My wife has a Dr. appointment on Monday. We have -25 days every winter. We're prepared for it. You stay inside, if you can, but people go to work as usual.
Where such temperatures happen regularly, people deal with it. In northern MN, it may hit -50 on Sunday night. They'll cope, too. We're prepared.
Texasgal
(17,045 posts)but I literally cannot imagine that. I just can't.
I've traveled to places with snow, we have cold temps that hit us form time to time but -50 is just not something I can wrap my head around!

Sognefjord

MineralMan
(146,317 posts)at 70 degrees. When we go out, we warm the car up in the driveway. We dress for the outside temps. It's not that big a deal, if you're prepared. Last year, our furnace stopped working on a bitter cold day. We made a call and it was fixed within two hours. Where we live, we're ready for it.
Even people who are strapped for money can find resources. It's the norm here in the winter, so everyone's ready for it.
I know it sounds weird, and I'm a California guy, but I've adapted.
PotatoChip
(3,186 posts)We've had a few mild winters in recent years, but that is the exception. Usually, we can expect a week or 2 of double digit sub zero temps, yet everything goes on as normal just as it does for you guys.
One thing I find odd about this year though, is how early into the winter season it is happening. We are now well into week 2 of this. Most of the time, these bitter cold spells tend to happen around mid to late January or early February.
As an aside, this past summer was oddly exceptional too. So hot and muggy that Mr PC and I had to go out and buy a small (just for the bedroom) air conditioner. We've never needed AC before.

(53,661 posts)I remember seeing news reports of Detroit and Chicago with wind chill factors of a hundred below zero about 40 years ago. I could not imagine living there, but they were ready for it.;.
Yes, people died, just as they did in the summers there, too. But over all, things were more organized then.
A few summers ago this area had ambulances running up and down the streets all day and night because of the heat. Most people don't have air conditioning. The city set up cooling centers to take care of those who couldn't handle the heat.
But we are well prepared for the cold, even though we don't have the long cold spells like people are getting now in most of the country...
A few years ago many people were bousebound due to a lot of snow, unable to get around. We are told to be prepared at all times to take care of ourselves if everything quits. I was indoors for 3 weeks, stocked up and lucky to have power.
Of course, some people have to go places, and then it's an adventure. Here's a local scene. Turn the sound all the way up!
Texasgal
(17,045 posts)It's just weird for me to understand -50! LOL! I get the heat thing, we are far more prepared for hot temps here. We are used to hot summers and get confused when people ask or are concerned about it.

(51,076 posts)so when it snows there'll be call-ins so she'll have to go work to top it all off.
Before I was a married man I used to love the snow, couldn't wait to get out in it but as I age and with kids and wife to worry with I no longer like it a bit. Like where your mother lives most times our snows are only here for a few days at most, sometimes it'll snow at night and by evening the next day it'll be gone. Don't think thats going to happen this time though as it looks like the cold will be with us a few days at least.
I think your mother is in for more of this snow than we are. Hope she stays in a stays safe and warm.

-25 in tonight in Fargo ND -24° tomorrow night. Lows of -20° to -35° are common in Fargo this time of year. The cold settles in the Eastern side of North Dakota because it is a large flat valley. The same goes for Winnipeg, except they are closer to the ice machines.

The low tomorrow night is supposed to be -21, with a "high" on Monday of -13. That's straight temps without wind chill.
2naSalit
(86,646 posts)later it's forecast at -5F... which means it will probably be about -15F which isn't bad over here in the northern Rockies, along the divide. We're just going to get a little of it by being on the western edge of the cold air mass. But what the plains are expecting is what we get at least once or twice during any given winter and it can last for weeks. We're getting off easy on this event.
Stay warm everybody, let your faucets run with a stream about the width of a pencil lead, dripping won't be enough to keep the pipes open and unfrozen at those temps. If your drains won't drain, pour a quarter to a half a container of salt, any kind, down the drain with a kettle of really hot water and wait a little while, that could help. Let your pets sleep with you if your house gets cold, huddling is good.
Also, close your drapes and shades... candles and incandescent lights help heat the air. And baking something that will take most of the night is also a good way to help heat a place.
All stuff I learned to do when it gets that cold and lasts for days to weeks.

(30,249 posts)It was the day from hell for traveling because there was bad weather in FL, in my connecting city (Charlotte, NC) and at Newark airport. Both flights got delayed and both landed in very heavy fog. People were amazed that they even landed in the designated city. The first flight was smooth, but the second one was a bit bumpy. When I finally got to Newark (after 10:40PM), we found out that all the other NY airports were closed due to the fog. The fog was so heavy in Charlotte and Newark that we didn't realize we had landed until we heard the bump when the tires hit the tarmac. To top it all, the airline didn't send the bags on my flight from Charlotte. They arrived on a later flight. By then it was raining and the line to get a cab was almost a block long.
I'm finally home having a cup of tea before going to bed. I left a message at work that I was taking half a day. If it wasn't for an important meeting in the afternoon, I would have taken the whole day.

(1,364 posts)in Upstate NY, about an hour west of Albany. Was 9 below yesterday morning. Calling for rain RAIN this afternoon. We just got a foot and a half of snow and the temps have been below zero and Tuesday we are expected to go back into the deep freeze. I've been keeping my own records here at home since Nov. 1980. Last winter was an average winter. I often find that people's memories of the weather are more for single events rather than an entire season. As a result, impressions are often scaled to that perception. Hey! It's winter! We live up North, to be expected. Look at it this way, January and February are the coldest months and by April, it'll be beautiful.
