Indiana: Cracks starting to show in support for gay marriage ban
Cracks are beginning to surface in legislative support for an Indiana constitutional ban on gay marriage. At least three lawmakers who voted for the proposal three years ago have reversed their positions.
Several other lawmakers are re-considering their support amid quickly shifting public opinion and growing pressure from a broad coalition of ban opponents.
But it would take a seismic shift in lawmakers' opinions to defeat the ban this year and prevent it from going to voters for a November referendum. And conservative groups supporting the ban already are taking out ads to publicly pummel those who change their minds.
In 2011, the ban passed in the House by a 70-26 vote and in the Senate by a 40-10 margin. Since then, 19 new Republicans and six new Democrats were elected to the House and three new Republicans and one Democrat in the Senate in 2012.
