Can "stupid" be fixed?

Obamacare Advocates Struggle To Convince Rural Uninsured

Rexburg is Republican country — all local lawmakers are GOP, and residents voted overwhelmingly for presidential candidate Mitt Romney in 2012. Ballard sometimes finds himself the target of criticism when he's manning the Wal-Mart booth.

"I've actually had people come up to me and boo me," he said. "They come up to me and go 'Boo, hiss. Boo, hiss. I will never sign up that.'"

Back in Florida, Mitchell had no takers during his afternoon of trying to get people to sign up. Some in the small waiting room told him that even with federal subsidies they would face a choice between utilities, food, gas or monthly health insurance. One woman asked Mitchell about the fine for not having health insurance. She laughed and said the $95 is much more affordable than a monthly health insurance bill.

"Stupid" can't be fixed ... it is a willful thing. However, the vast majority of these people aren't "stupid" so much as ignorant and woefully misinformed.

I don't like labeling poor working class people as "stupid". The truly stupid, are the demagogues who actively mislead them.

I find the ease with which people refer to the 'underclasses' as stupid to be nausea-inducing.

I have real problems "blaming" folks, whose energies and resources are focused on survival issues stupid just because they do not spend hours, daily, on-line in order to tease out which olitical lines are, and are not, supportive of their interests.

But the vast majority of those working class folks being called stupid are not willfully ignorant ... they lack access to understandable information and/or lack the resources, i.e., time and energy, to seek out that information.

as the vast majority of the uninformed move with the crowd. Given time ... the uninformed will sign up, as more and more of those around them get signed up.

I realize everything must happen yesterday; but social change is not a sprint (though the sprinters get all the attention), it is a marathon, where the route frequently changes.

They won't stay that way. These people are going to be thoroughly pissed when they catch on. The local hardware store is going to see a run on tar and feathers. I can't wait.

They prefer to have Faux and Limbaugh do their thinking for them.

I don't know whether to laugh or cry about idiots like this.
