the issues being carved out of health insurance coverage for target practice? What if women decided they did not WANT to pay for Viagra? What if young people decide they don't WANT to pay for hip and knee surgeries? Insurance is supposed to cover whatever your issue is. What if you choose from a laundry list of potentials and your dumb, unlucky ass gets something that's not on your list? Why are we still being bothered by birth control and abortion again?
Religious objection, you say? There are religious reasons in some denomination that objects to fixing anything that ails you. According to some religions it is God's will that you be sick, crippled, poor, raped, beaten, murdered, enslaved, starved, etc., etc., etc.,. Why do we bother trying to remedy anything? Because we are supposed to be civilized. We are supposed to be trying to improve the life experience for more and more people. Giving birth to a child you can't love because they are the result of rape or incest, or one you know you can't support financially in a system that is less and less sympathetic to your circumstance, or a child who will be sick and suffer every day of their life while you watch helplessly should not be decided by anyone but you. In a world where a man can make babies on the fly and keep moving, leaving a woman to carry the burden alone; why are we still being bothered by birth control and abortion again?

(50,566 posts)I believe that the main purpose at the heart of the three big patriarchal monotheisms is to control and stomp down women. That is their main reason for existing.

They always did have problems seeing the bigger picture though.

(64,933 posts)on the Military Industrial Complex. We spent at least $700billion last year and more than the rest of the nations in the world combined. That is a truly disgraceful number. And it is only used to enrich a few 1%'ers and to kill millions.

(4,309 posts)Very well said. My conscience rests a whole lot easier with sex education, contraception and abortion than it ever will with multi-billion dollar weapons systems.
You're right. The figures speak for themselves. It is sickening.

(35,309 posts)Congress collects taxes. At that point it's their money to do with as they want, in some sense. They spend it on various things.
As opposed to your getting a bill in which it's spelled out that a certain amount of the $ you contribute will be spent on military spending, so you know that of the $4000 in federal income tax you contribute per year $2,050 goes to the DOD. And if there were some way of reducing that amount on your part, you'd be sure that $2,050 less would go to the DOD.
(Although the thinking is cute. It's like the Sisters' in that you view yourself ultimately as having some responsibility or potential responsibility for something not under your direct control--but one step even further removed from their perceived responsibility because there's somebody between you and the DOD who actually is making the decision.)
Don't have to agree with the Sisters' to be able to understand their reasoning and even be vaguely sympathetic to it.

(801 posts)Abortion and contraception are great hot button issues that will keep us divided so the the real pillage and plunder can happen without interruption by the general public. Think Terry Shavo, Wiener's wiener, and even Duck Dynasty- just crap on the lawn to confuse and obfuscate the real issues of our day and time......

(10,201 posts)Even in SF, the Mayor and his spokesperson seem to think that radical theocratic hate speech against the civil, human and Constitutional rights of female citizens is, ahem, "free speech". We all know that were the same Usual Suspects looking to put up banners on Market Street during Pride Month stating "Marriage Equality Hurts Gays", that the proposal would be 86'd in a hot NY minute.

(7,809 posts)Yes, let's get twenty-somethings to object to hip replacements. Let women file a lawsuit against having Viagra covered in their insurance plan. Let those whose religions are against blood transfusions demand that they have a plan that won't cover such a thing. How about those who believe that a cure can only be done through prayer making their own ruckus?
Now let's have all these lawsuits filed, appealed, then appealed all the way up to the Supreme Court. One of my favorite argument techniques is to take an argument to its (extreme) logical conclusion. With all these people and groups fussing over their own pet issues, it won't take long for the rest of us - even those who may agree with one or two of those issues - to get fed up with all the nonsense. If they have to take one group's issue seriously, they'll have to take them all seriously, and that will lead to more madness than even the anti-BC and anti-choice people will want to deal with.
That's my hope, anyway.

(36,221 posts)And it is god's way of culling the herd.
I am being completely sarcastic with the above, but I think the argument could be made. Why they carve out these two particular issues that effect women only, in terms of getting treatment, is beyond me. And how that isn't a violation of equal protection, I'm not sure. I'm not a lawyer...

These are not a part of the 1% but it does not cross their minds they could tell the radical Taliban legislatures if they do not change their hard nose policies against poor people then they will take their votes to someone who will work for the 99%.

(6,342 posts)Religious conservatives put a lot of money in the GOP coffers. So the GOP has to attack abortion in order to get that money...even if those attacks go absolutely nowhere.
