Largest Company
It has 800,000 students, up from 243,000 seven years ago, making it Americas largest for-profit college company by enrollment. Since going private in 2007, Laureates annual revenue has more than tripled to $4 billion.
Though Laureate isnt well-known in the U.S., it employs one of the countrys most recognizable figures: former President Bill Clinton. In 2010, the company hired Clinton to serve as its honorary chancellor. In this paid position, Clinton has trekked to Laureates campuses in countries such as Malaysia, Peru and Spain, making more than a dozen appearances on its behalf.
Laureate is backed by several of the biggest names in finance, including Henry Kravis, George Soros, Steve Cohen and Paul Allen. When Laureates founder and chief executive officer, Doug Becker, convinced these investors firms to take his company private in a deal worth $3.8 billion, Kraviss firm, KKR & Co., took a $487.5 million stake.
By 2010, according to a KKR memo to investors, its investment had increased in value to $710.8 million.

(59,504 posts)Reading the article, this seems to be an extremely poor use of his name and his reputation.
I really do not know how to test how the international programs are doing - but many comments are troubling. On the US programs, I decided to google to see what ratings I could find on Walden in Minnesota as they bragged about the fact that kids repaid the loans.
At this link there are two ratings, the first - I never heard of - the SMART rating where IU Bloomington gets a 93 and Harvard a 100 - they get 36. The other was Washington Monthly rated them 236 out of 284 national universities. If this college is the one they are bragging about, imagine the rest! (The smart score is especially poor - I tried even second tier state schools, that likely would be cheaper and they were significantly higher - in the 50s. The fact that IU was so close to Harvard shows that there have to be a lot of universities clustered between 90 and 100. Use this link to enter schools you know - http://colleges.findthebest.com/l/634/Walden-University.)

(59,504 posts)Whether there is a problem is based on what it does - and at least in the US, the University mentioned does not seem good.
Hillary Clinton really should suggest that he not do this until she is out of politics.
