"The Republicans have lost the national contraception war."

Republicans Still Trying To Thread The Needle On Contraception

Evan McMorris-Santoro March 16, 2012, 6:00 AM

A pair of polls out this week appears to prove what the Democrats have been saying for weeks: The Republicans have lost the national contraception war. But Republicans are prepared to press on in the states, where they say the polling and the electorate favor them.

New polling shows a majority of Americans are so far unconvinced — they see the fight over access to contraception coverage as a women’s health issue — not a matter of religious liberty. What’s more, they don’t think religious liberty is generally in peril.

snip//

That’s not great news for the GOP
, which has banked on voters agreeing that religious liberty is endangered.

snip//

It wasn’t supposed to be like this. Early in the contraception fight, many Republicans said Obama had finally gone too far, giving the GOP the angle of attack it needed to press the case that he was out of touch with average Americans. Some in the GOP warned the Republicans against trying this, but they forged ahead anyway.

The polling suggests the national fight has gone the way Democrats (and the GOP critics) said it would. Republicans on the national level are now on the defensive. The NRSC, which has been pushing back hard against Democratic plans to capitalize on the contraception issue in Senate races, says the issue still plays in their favor on the ground in the states.

5. I think that these states

Are going to experience a rude awakening at the polls, too. Combined with a lack of enthusiasm over the Republican presidential choices, and the ridiculous laws that are anti-woman, I suspect that the Local and State government landscape is going to change, too. Just wait until some of these Local and State politicians start running again and women start speaking out about how they crowed about the economy and jobs, then did absolutely nothing but try to bust unions, destroy women's health care, and push socially conservative policies that benefit no one but rich, straight white males.

8. Republican controlled states are mostly rural places where the Right enjoys control over the AM dial

Americans have ceded control to our public airwaves years ago. With that type of a microphone to facilitate thought, it is any wonder that these states as so red? I know left-leaning people who register as Republicans in order to have any sort of say in their local government AND to not piss off their neighbors.

Why doesn't the FCC fine Rush? After the Fluke stuff blows over, it's going to be the same sh** different day.

2. They Still Think They Are Winning

The GOP still thinks they are winning. And I do believe that they believe it does not matter what voters think, they have stolen the election already as far as they are concerned. They do not believe in elections or fair elections. They are doubling down every day on voter ID. And if that won't work they will misinform, distort and intimidate non GOP voters from voting. I just do not think voters take seriously how dangerous the GOP is now. And they have probably a billion dollars from billionaires to buy all the votes they need through media propaganda. And they have the voting machines on their side all they have to do is flip all the votes and count only GOP votes.

I cannot think of any other reason for their over the top boldness except that they have set up massive election fraud.

7. That's what I think, too, and I'm really worried.

I think they are going to make a de facto dictatorship soon, a theocracy, and I'm not sure any of us will be able to do anything about it.

4. They listened to Rush Limbaugh

Who said in mid-February that the way for Republicans to win was on socially conservative issues. Regardless of what they say, he is the de facto leader and adviser of the Republican party. Not only did Rush go too far and is in imminent danger of implosion, he's lead Republicans down a path that they can't win.

They know they can't win on economics because not one of them since they have been in office has done a damn thing about economic conditions because they were hellbent on destroying the economy. All they have are socially conservative issues, and the majority of Americans are not socially conservative regardless of what the loud voices of Fundies scream - they are a small, but vocal minority.

The blatant racism displayed by some Republicans and their supporters hasn't helped them, either. With the attacks on women's health care, it's obvious that the only thing Republicans have to run on is dragging our entire nation back to the 1950's when women and minorities "knew their place". In November, they will see how well that works with everyone who isn't a white, straight, Christian male. Hint: It's not going to be pretty.

6. Media wise, maybe. In the real world, state by state, outrageous victories with no end in sight.

There is nothing to rejoice about at this time. Sorry, but that's my opinion. Whereas Obama is standing up for people, he's not in charge on the state level where these laws have been passed, intimidating and degrading women. No court has stopped any of these bills while time is marching on in the lives of the women effected.
