I know he was a Republican, but he was one of the last decent Republicans. We all have our flaws and so did he, but he had some good instincts. Needless to say, I was only a kid then, but i still remember him with a certain child-like fondness.... Ms Bigmack

Granted, Ike would be a dangerous liberal in this day and age, but he still presided over some pretty nefarious policies.

In fact, there was a special effort to dispatch Patrice Lumumba before JFK was inaugurated because it was generally believed that Kennedy wouldn't be as agreeable as Ike was to such policies. Accordingly, Lumumba was assassinated on January 17, 1961.

Similarly, the Truman administration had opposed a coup in Iran and so the CIA didn't overthrow Mossadegh until August, 1953, seven months into Eisenhower's first term.

Thanks to lobbying by the United Fruit Company, Guatemala's Arbenz was deposed by the CIA roughly a year later.

I hate war as only a soldier who has lived it can, only as one who has seen its brutality, its futility, its stupidity.

In the councils of government, we must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the militaryindustrial complex. The potential for the disastrous rise of misplaced power exists and will persist.

We must never let the weight of this combination endanger our liberties or democratic processes. We should take nothing for granted. Only an alert and knowledgeable citizenry can compel the proper meshing of the huge industrial and military machinery of defense with our peaceful methods and goals, so that security and liberty may prosper together.

to uphold the Supreme Court decision in Brown vs. Board of Education, he gave one of the most dramatic speeches to the nation ever given by a President. He was leading the federal government in acting against a State's assertion of State's Rights. He was concerned with how the U.S. looked to other countries in the world in violating the human rights of African Americans. He showed respect for the United Nations and its charter. This way of thinking would be completely foreign to any Republican today.

"...Our enemies are gloating over this incident and using it everywhere to misrepresent our whole nation. We are portrayed as a violator of those standards of conduct which the peoples of the world united to proclaim in the Charter of the United Nations. There they affirmed “faith in fundamental human rights” and “in the dignity and worth of the human person” and they did so “without distinction as to race, sex, language or religion.” ..."

...today's bagger/fundie/rethug's slogan would be "We hate Ike".

More's the pity. Once upon a time there were republicans who were people of principle who understood the value of a bi-partisan give and take. No more.

PEACE!

But in regard to USAns at least it isn't the case at all.

The corporate media and our violent culture have managed to brainwash enough of our people into believing that we have to fight for the "security" of the empire in any part of the globe the 1% sends us to. Our supposedly peace loving populace has unleashed a War OF Terror all over the world.

Polls often indicate that the majority of folks don't want war. Nevertheless we keep electing people who vote for funding war every chance they get.

We've had at least 50 years to prove Ike right but we certainly haven't made any progress.
