Have you ever been punched in the face over and over and over again?

That's exactly what it's like being poor. It's getting a swift kick to the balls, or the gut, or a punch in the face - or all three - several times a day on a daily basis. For the poor, it's a constant stream of bad news. For a group that is constantly portrayed as "takers" they have high demands placed on their own wallets each day.

I've written here a bit about my family's struggles. They just keep getting worse. And I see it happening to struggling friends and acquaintances all around me. There's a constant theme in our lives. Among the steady stream of motivational Facebook memes about "Staying strong" and "thinking positive" is a cold harsh reality - just when you think you can't take anymore, you get hit again. Maybe I'm too young to remember - I'm only 35 - but I simply do not remember a time when it was this bad for so many. Never in my wildest dreams did I think this would be my life. I never thought I'd be raising children in poverty, rationing my food, eating leftover Halloween candy for breakfast, say no to a child who is hungry, begging for charity, and all of the other things that poor people do in their oh-so-glamorous (by teabagger, GOP, Christian Right standards).

Just today, we got a notice that our rent will be increasing from $1,078 per month to $1,122 per month. That is base rent and does not include any utilities or services. Will my husband get a raise at any of his three jobs? No. Will he get more hours? Nope. In fact, his hours were just cut at two of the jobs (the third has always been a low hour job). He asks, begs if I'm honest, for more hours and his bosses...oh, how they cry that they just can't give more hours because, you know, the economy is so bad and their company only took in a few billion last year and their CEO might have to lay off at least one chef. I am still unemployed and it doesn't look good for me at this point. Even so, I still haven't even made it to the waiting list for child care subsidy for my kids. Already today, my husband mentioned to a manager that our rent is increasing and he needs all the hours he can get. Advice? Just move somewhere cheaper. Because moving is free. Breaking a lease is free. Poor people obviously have amazing credit and can get great apartments for super cheap. Because super cheap housing exists. Right? Of course not....but this is the fantasy land of the affluent. People just don't get it. They lack perspective. My husband earns less than $8.00 at two jobs, less than $10.00 an hour at the other. Yet utility costs go up, gas prices increase, rent goes up, food costs go up, our food stamps got cut, car repair costs go up. Everything increases so companies make a profit while us little people just wait for the shit to roll to the bottom of the hill. Is it ever going to stop?

I'm told everyday to just pray, stay graceful, or put positive thoughts out to the Universe and welcome abundance in my life. Fuck that shit. As much as I do believe somewhat, fuck it. None of that is keep gas in the car and food on the table. And we're the bad guys. Being poor means we're vilified. It means I obviously don't work hard enough. My husband is obviously a loser because he lacks skills. We're moochers. My SNAP card means everyone else has the right to inspect my food choices and comment on them as they go on the conveyer belt at the grocery store. My son should have to work off his free crappy lunch at school. People assume we're in this place because we made poor choices. We.Did.Not. My husband lost a somewhat good job. It wasn't perfect, but he was making a bit more than he is now and we were doing fine. And we had a savings! A savings. He lost that job, we lived off our emergency fund. And that was it. Once money is gone, it's gone. We have no credit card debt. We don't have cable. We don't buy tech shit. No video game systems or iAnything. Our debt is student loans (which have actually been paid in full if you go by amount, but the interest rate makes sure you pay until you die) and medical debt. I'm still paying for a miscarriage I had in 2010. A dead baby and debt. We're here because of the lack of decent wages for people who work hard. Three jobs. In what world is it even moral for a man to work three jobs and not be able to support his family. Three mother fucking jobs, we still need government assistance, and we still can't make it. That's not okay! And politicians and corporations want us to have LESS. It's insane. And religious leaders tell us we need to be more godly or some shit and throw a prosperity bible our way. It's bullshit. It's a miracle that I'm even here. It really is.

I continue to rant about this to bring an everyday voice to this struggles. I know folks on DU understand this. Too many of us here understand this life. Too many of my friends understand it. We have to work hard to elect people who will raise the minimum raise. We have to work hard to topple the power that corporations have over this country. It's 2014 and it's a big year for elections. I have a gut-wrenching fear what another 2010-style teabaggy win would do to people like me. I don't want to see it happen.

people like me should help by stocking food banks to over flowing, pick a family and help with the cost of utilities, do what ever you can to help folks look for work. Do job searches for them if they don't have the time, help with resume writing.
There is enough money to help many people if we formed safety nets as local community groups. Do what ever you can for another person to lift their spirits.

I constantly have this fight about people who ask for money on the street.
They wouldn't be there if there was a better way to support themselves. I have people telling me that I need to be sure they spend the money the way I would intend them to. I don't give a hoot what they do with it. There is good karma created for me and for them.

He was in management (lower level). The poverty among his co-workers - for a mid to upper class area - was disgusting. There's a lot of food insecurity here.

And you know what sucks? Our food pantry is on a main Road. There is typically a line outside before the pantry opens. Everyone is on display for the rest of the community to see - hello, we're you neighborhood poor folks and we look just like you! The pantry is trying to get a new location and it has been fought (not successfully) by the neighborhood because they don't want "those people" there.

Almost every week, there is an ad in the paper of families in need, like to pay a bill. There's usually about three listed. By the time I call, they have been taken care of. That's how fast the public response is to the ad. But I know that there are far more than a few families in need.

They keep your social security number on file and limit you to one pick up every 3 months unless you are sponsored by one of the food bank churches. The food usually has about 2 pounds, total, of meat/chicken/game, a few cans of vegetables, and LOT of beans and bread.

But according to our state social services, although we're way under their designated "poverty line", we don't qualify for assistance.

This is what I do for my husband. He's almost always working with the three jobs, so I spend a lot of time job searching for both of us. Many people are like us - they work non-stop to get a piss poor check and don't have the time or resources (such as a computer, etc) in order to properly job search.

You're a good writer and you should be confident in that. When I began getting letters printed in local papers I was always a bit down about people who would call me an idiot in the comments. Now I wear it as a badge of honor. As my hubby says, "you're known by the enemies you make." And nothing feels as good as thoroughly pissing off some right wing idiot enough that he wants to fume about it in the comments section.

There's a lot of tea in this area, so I imagine local comments will be unkind.

We have received assistance from St.Vincent de Paul. They are a wonderful organization. I'm Catholic so I am familiar, but I recommend them to anyone because they don't make you pray, attend Mass, or accept Bibles to get assistance. The one in our area is stretched very thin, which is telling - many are struggling.

people down, and weighted down with burdens of every type, i.e. financial, medical, food insecurity, inability to provide for loved ones, etc.. drains their will to push back against low wages, political corruption, shrinking voting rights, and unfair workplace practices which benefit the 1% greatly.

I think it is deliberate and calculated. I don't believe they give a damn about the financial burden of paying for programs like food stamps, social security, and other safety nets. I think their actual motive is that they just don't want the less fortunate to be given a helping hand. Because when there are large numbers of desperate people who have no other options, they are expendable and easily replaced, and they will DO AS THEY ARE TOLD.

I think this extends even to the plight of returning vets. Republicans like to wrap themselves in the flag and scorn anyone who disrespects active duty personnel. But when they come home injured physically or emotionally they treat them like shit.

Almost everything policy stand they take is a thinly veiled plan to burden average people with so many grave worries that they will have no choice other than to beg for gruel from the 1%.

Thu Jan 16, 2014, 04:51 PM

if you'll have enough to eat from day to day, not knowing if you'll be able to keep utilities turned on, having to make sure to save enough to ride the bus to go get whatever help you can from churches, the food stamp office, etc... It doesn't let up. And stress has serious consequences on health.

I see threads talking about how its more expensive to be poor, and I see the surprise expressed by those apparently just finding this out, and I just shake my head.

We need so much more empathy in this country. Reagan and the IGMFU mentality that he ushered in have to go.

I have not read the children's books written by the wives of various Republican politicians, but I would not be surprised if they were propaganda.

There are church youth groups that get indoctrinated. So do many scout troops. About six years ago, I read how church groups were teaching history in public schools in Texas at their (the church group's) own expense. (I had seen enough of James Kennedy's history lesson type sermons on Trinity Broadcasting to imagine what was being said in those history classes.)

I don't know what Democrats never attempted to come up with youth programs or anything comparable to the church networks that have been there for Republicans since at least Roe v. Wade. I don't mean Democratic leaning churches, but some kind of community networks. Those churches can turn out people for boycotts and picketing almost on a dime.

Many Christians have fallen away from the life that Jesus wants us to live. They take a few narrow passages in the Bible and then make up their own beliefs - mostly about hatred and self-centeredness. They have been feed a constant line on how they're the victim and others are the victimizers.

Jesus was known to do radical things: Heal the sick and feed the hungry. He never looked down on the lepers and said, "If you weren't such a taker and got a job, you could pay the physician to get healed, you wretch!" Jesus never said "I've got my bread and fish, don't mooch off me!" Jesus was known to walk amongst the dregs of society and council with prostitutes.

If you say you're a christian and aren't willing to do as Christ did, then you're in for a shock when you meet him face to face and he asks, "Why did you not live as I did?"

I'll be sending prayers your way, and if you're not religious I'll sending good vibes. I hope your situation gets better.

Fri Jan 17, 2014, 04:08 PM

to speak God's truth to them. There is even some teaching that, once God calls you into a church, you "grow where you're planted." Meaning in part that that particular church is where God wants you and it is a lifetime commitment, maybe akin to marriage. So, if you decide this pastor is not your cup of tea, too bad. He's the one God wants you to hear.

So, while there is not the express claim of infallibility on the part of one person, as in the Catholic Church, there is a strong implication that God is talking to you out of the mouth of your pastor.

If you are a strong believer, there is almost no way out of that. I know women who became nuns in a cult, even though they longed for husbands and children and normal lives, but could not tear themselves away for decades, despite emotional abuse and sometimes physical abuse.

Even then, it usually took some dramatic event, like being called home in another state to say goodbye to a dying family member. And some never tore themselves away.

why? Because they had made a vow to God that they would be nuns there for life.

Next to that, what's changing political parties?

I believe you. To them, it is obvious. God never called the person speaking to you into the ministry. God never anointed him or her. God does not speak through him or her. So, of course, the pastor is obviously more connected to God and knows better.

My husband worked nearly non-stop during the holiday months and I was on edge worried about his health because he barely slept. Then the constant stress of wondering how the hell you will survive the next day is insurmountable. It's bad enough to deal with the health issues that come with the poor eating, but stress definitely lends a hand to bad health. I'm consistently exhausted (but...but....I should be so well rested because I don't work <-----hear that all the time), my hair is falling out. I have gastric issues that aren't helped by stress. And I have minor heart issues, but they "flare up" with stress. I am in a constant state of worry. All that cortisol can't be good.

And it IS so expensive. That article about being expensive to be poor had a good example about car repairs. You can't afford needed repairs and you get a ticket. That happened to me. I couldn't afford the needed repairs on my car, it couldn't pass safety inspection, and I ended up with a ticket and with a cop telling me that it could be incentive for me to find money and fix my car. It's insane.

It needs to be read by everyone. Full-stop, period, the end. Everyone in the country.

I've been there, just recently. A man in his mid-forties, working part-time in a book store for minimum wage and no benefits. Told I had to be "on call" for 30 hours a week when I was only given 10-18 hrs. a week of work. Standing at a counter ringing up right-wing customers, buying the usual right-wing books, who harangued me on their strident political views ("Obama-care" bad!--ditto gun control, gay rights and a minimum-wage hike) while my blistered feet leaked blood through holes in socks and shoes onto the floor. When a hundred-dollar traffic ticket precipitated an epic row with my understandably hyper-stressed, over-worked wife. (Yes, she--luckily--had full-time employment during my sojourn through the Slough of Despond.) What do we not pay this month? Utilities? Rent? Medical bills? What can wait: dental visit to relieve painful, growing tooth cavity? Diabetes medication? New glasses for failing vision?

I did, eventually, find a much better job and full-time employment.

I wish you and your husband the same.

But it shouldn't have to be this way. Our social safety net, average wage and full-time benefits should be much, much higher.

Remember all that nonsense about "don't let the perfect become the enemy of the good"?

Guess what. You are living the "good". Lovin' it yet? It's gonna get harder...

I do like this line...

"I'm told everyday to just pray, stay graceful, or put positive thoughts out to the Universe and welcome abundance in my life. Fuck that shit. " < Exactly!

That's what you are told to do by people who want to keep you in your place, keep you from getting what they took from you, keep you from taking it back from their Masters. What the Salvation Army used to promise, and what became derided by the Wobblies as "pie in the sky".

If we can ever get smart enough to get together, brave enough to turn our back on people that are hurting us ( especially the ones who say they are on our side) we could wrest our freedom from the bastards that hold it now. Might be, probably would be, a harder life for awhile, but the wealthy would have to go find something else to do, and they might find it so unsafe they have to leave the country. Too bad. But it would get better for us.

I doubt it will happen before we collapse, however, and then it will be much harder, because everyone will be more frightened, being thrust into something they have never prepared for. Unfortunately one of the ways we are inducted into servitude is to teach people - early on - to laugh at each other for our clumsiness in learning, clumsiness that is natural and an inseparable part of learning. And that makes just trying to learn new things harder than it needs to be.

We would be more independent and stronger if we learned how to push one another toward that something better we get when we work for everyone's good.

But this ain't that place.

Good luck...

I'm in the UK so I don't have quite the same anxieties. My healthcare is taken care of (until the bastard scum Tories finish privatizing the NHS), for example. But I'm disabled. I can only walk slowly, with crutches and I suffer from a collection of mental disorders (MDD, GAD, "visions" and voices) that make me completely non-functional for at least part of most days. So I'm on disability. I know the struggle it is to make ends meet, how you never have quite enough. And I know the stigma, how people judge you. We don't use the term "moocher" here, the British term is "benefit scrounger" but it's the same parcel of ignorance and lies and judgement and Victorian notions of the "undeserving poor". I'm suicidal at least part of most days but what keeps me going are my cats (here, there's a charity called the PDSA that provides free vet care to poor people).

Just hold on. Pray if it helps you or not if it doesn't but hold on. That's really all we can do.

I haven't missed voting in any local/state/federal election since 1972. It hasn't done a bit of good over the last 15 years. I've volunteered at our shelters (teen and adult), collected food, helped with fund-raisers, but it's all run by churches and they don't much appreciate my lack of belief. My husband has held his job for 13 years; our retirement savings are nonexistent, due to medical expenses and ungodly! rents. This is heavily military area, and base housing is inadequate; the military-subsidized off-base housing allowances have driven most of us working poor to extremely substandard housing. Most of my friends, and remember we're in our 60's, live in "dry" housing - no running water, with outhouses. They don't do so by choice. In-town, on-grid rentals start at around $800 a month for a one-room efficiency, and you're lucky if there are any utilities at all included.

And I get where you're coming from when someone tells you to move somewhere cheaper! (A) WHERE? and (B) HOW????

Perhaps we will survive. Your children alone are worth it!

"I'm told everyday to just pray, stay graceful, or put positive thoughts out to the Universe and welcome abundance in my life. Fuck that shit."

The fact an educated hard working family can't make ends meet is not some accident. It's a product of years of public policy and not some act of god.

You are pissed. You should be pissed.

less and less able to help the poor. In addition, as wages stagnate those that are making slightly above min wage are bitter when there is talk of raising the min wage because then soon they will be in the min wage category. They mistakenly feel that keeping the min wage down somehow helps them.

As poverty grows the poor look more and more to scapegoats. People to blame like immigrants or different races.

Don't look askance at the one making 350 times the average compensation of the company. They're the ones you should worship and aspire to emulate.

Look only at the ones making even less than you do. Cause their the ones who are after your job and your family's happiness.

It's worked for thousands of years. The tactic may be getting a little worn, but they are investing tons of money in shoring it up. Everything from CNBC to reality shows about people supposedly having an "aspirational" lifestyle for us to admire and yearn for.

I believe the site is down for some maintenance. I know there was a message on there from OGR saying the site is growing so she needs to work on getting help to manage it. Until then, some parts are shut down. My post is still up, but I don't know if the donation thingie works. I know I cannot edit it at this time.

Wishadoo is a Godsend. With that, my fellow Duers, and some friends of mine, we survived the last couple of months and Santa came for my kids. This site has the potential to make a difference in so many lives.....it's huge!

I will most certainly keep writing.

104. The depression has not ended
Fri Jan 17, 2014, 11:54 AM
Jan 2014

It took 15 years ,a world war and some serious congressional regulations on banks to bring us out of the last great depression. This one, we dont even talk about anymore. Its a dirty secret. There are more important issues such as guns, and gays, and who will win the super bowl. That is what matters. Forget about any action by this congress to reign in the billionaires who are working as hard as they can to destroy the American dream.
I watched it start in 1979. I knew what the result would be. How come no one else did? I was just a kid.
Reagan pointed at poor people and said there is our problem. Some black woman was siphoning off all our wealth through welfare fraud. So we all elected him to go after the black people. We were worried about the black people ,we are always worried about the dark skinned people.
Now, we are all poor. So they attack the gays, they label us a liberal and attack us based on our weakness, a conscience.

It's because we're liberals, we support gays, and we don't go to the right churches. So, God punishes us by taking away our prosperity. That's the bullshit they believe and preach. Assholes.

They are more worried about praising that Duck Dynasty freak and making sure his 1st Amendment rights are protected and heralded, but God forbid they look to poor children and offer them a hand. Oh no, that's the devil's work.

160. They feel like they need to protect themselves
Fri Jan 17, 2014, 10:12 PM
Jan 2014

This is what they say all the time. Today, I heard a radio broadcast wherein the caller posited 'the need to be armed, because if they take that away, there will be no stopping the socialist liberals from taking over'
This was after he made the point that gun owners are the most law abiding people in the world. So, if they are so tame, how is owning a gun going to make a difference?
He thinks his guns will stop the liberals by simply possessing them. We are supposed to cower and STFU because he owns a gun.
The discussion concerned one of these idiots who walk around with an assault rifle like its normal to do that and no one should freak out.
Because we can tell the good guys from the bad guys how? They are idiots. They are promoting murder. They are sanctioning murder. They cheer for the death penalty ,they are primitive.
