Cuomo has signed a redistricting bill that favors Republicans at election time. A Democrat caving on this kind of crap is unacceptable.
IMO, Cuomo has his eye on the 2016 presidential primaries. Signing this bill will come back to haunt him.
Here's a link to a NY Times editorial on this topic.

(7,549 posts)If he were to run in a Democratic Primary for President in 2016, he would not get my vote. There has to be a legitimate Democrat out there, who will deserve the parties nomination more. That said if he ends up the Democratic candidate, I will have to vote for him over a total PUKE in the general election but I will have to wear a paper clip over my nose. So I hope he is not the Democratic nominee.
I loved his dad, Mario, in fact he was one of the reasons, I became a Democrat.
What a shame the son is such a RePUKE in disquise.

(94,571 posts)It "favors incumbents" in both Parties in their respective Chamber of control . Not saying that's an improvement, but let's not suggest partisan preference.

That's one of the kinder things the editorial has to say, actually.

(24,331 posts)Yes, it favors incumbent Democrats in the Assembly, but the reality is that the Assembly has a 2/3 Democratic majority and will continue to regardless of redistricting. Even a purely pro-Republican gerrymander of the Assembly lines couldn't change that.
However, this DOES make it likely the Republicans will keep their razor-thin control of the State Senate, which they did via some of the most amazing gerrymandering you could imagine. So I think it's fair to say that it favors Republicans much more than it does incumbent Democrats.

This is really disappointing.

(4,690 posts)ever since he challenged favorite Carl McCall in the 2002 primary forcing the McCall campaign to exhaust their resources on the primary fight. Then, on the eve of the primary, when it was clear Cuomo couldn't get elected, he dropped out leaving the way clear for Republican Pataki to win.

Then there is this:
"The lawmakers also approved an expansion of the states DNA database to include samples from those convicted of any crime, including all misdemeanors. They exempted DNA collection from anyone without a criminal record who is convicted of possessing small amounts of marijuana. But they did not approve videotaping of police interrogations and other ways to help prevent convictions of innocent people measures that Mr. Cuomo should push for. Also, as part of the deal, lawmakers passed a teacher evaluation system that puts more emphasis on student achievement"
No way in hell can we allow this corporatist goomba near the Whitehouse.
