it was called "soldier's heart."

I don't know how that fits into Carlin's framing of the issue, but to me "soldier's heart" always sounded so infinitely sad. As if, not only is your nervous system shattered, but your heart has been broken as well.

This was before "shell shock" or whatever you want to call it was even recognized as a medical condition. It's the term that the families of veterans, and the veterans themselves, came up with, before the doctors were even involved.
