"Trans" vs "Intra"

Why "transvaginal" sonogram? Trans means "across". The probe doesn't actually "cross" or "go over" but rather "through" or up or down.

What is the reason for using the trans prefix?

I think it's because it sounds less invasive than it really is.

through the vaginal wall to pick up those images.

This, as opposed to doing the ultrasound from the abdomen.

It's a medical term and really doesn't have anything to do with making it sound less invasive.

Everyone already knows it is shoving an inanimate object into a woman's vagina against her will if she has the audacity to need or want an abortion. And make no mistake, women that need abortions due to inviable pregnancies frequently happen, even among conservative women.

It's all hideous, and it's been exposed, and needs to keep being exposed as intrusive. But I do see your point that they are trying to use more "clean" language to follow a despicable law.
