I know why Republicans are doing what they are doing

Because if you break the system, Republicans can continue to remain relevant. If you roll back progress, the fight continues.

If Democrats succeed in fixing the system, Republicans become irrelevant and die. They are trying to roll back as much progress as they can - civil rights legislation, tax legislation, women's rights, voting rights, etc - because they need problems to survive.

Right now, Republicans are deliberately trying to roll back progress, to create problems, to break the system far worse than it is, so they can survive as a party.

The one where they are looking at 2012 comes the closest after this one to make sense.

Actually, had a sense of it during the Bush administration but it seems to me much more obvious now. The farther Republicans roll us back in time, the more time they buy for their dying party. They want a total refresh. Before women's rights, before civil rights, before workers rights so they can keep fighting these battles forever with Democrats.

It's disgusting and terrifying but I don't see any other logic to it than that. They are literally trying to break the country and they know it.

They know that their time is coming to and end. And so they are going to make as big a mess as they can on the way out. They have no other ideas. Their hope is that the mess they make will be so great, no one can fix it quickly (think 4 years), and so they will get future opportunities at holding power as a result.

That's the only thing they care about.

They want to refight the battles the Dems won in the past 100 years so it keeps the Dems from addressing corporate exploitation, campaign finance reform, tax reform, energy reform, all the modern issues that could fix this country once and for all. They want to go back and refight the old battles so it keeps the Dems off of the modern battles.

This nothing more than the last stand of the Christian Right, they are pulling out all the stops. They are scared of progress, white males in the minority, church attendance on the decline, looking for their male fascist white guy leader, and just plain ignorant of evolution of mankind.

Was it Marx whom said:Religion is the Opiate of the masses?

this theory:

The Republican party requires the existence of social, economic and political inequities to pretend they are needed to "fix" these inequities. If the inequities are allowed to be addressed, the debate over them dies and with it the platform of Republican party.
