General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsThe Republicans have made Roe v Wade moot. The forced birthers have won.
I've actually been saying this for some time now. Without having to overturn Roe, they've won. The states that would likely ban abortion have pretty much managed to make it so difficult for a a woman to avail herself of her rights that they no longer exist in any reasonable form and the states that would retain choice have done so. Just as if Roe had been overturned and the matter had reverted to the governance of the individual states. You can say that this isn't true. that Roe is still the law of the land, but it's not for many women- poor women. Women of means still have choice. Just as it ever was.
What do we do? I'm at a loss. Where is the media? Where are women in the media? Are they really so afraid of being called liberal toadies by the right that they won't report, do a special on the subject? what the hell?
what is the most effective language to use in this battle? How do we strengthen coalitions? How do we protect Planned Parenthood from the endless demonization.
It's all so disheartening.
And frightening.

(14,195 posts)into a dirty word, like liberal. Perhaps now that the tealiban/xtian extremists have shown their true colors the young women and men will rise up, become active and support progressives?

(26,549 posts)Culmination implies end-game. That's not where we are. In fact, we're just starting act 2.
Anti-abortionists are actually anti-women, but hid behind the "think of the babies!!" shtick. But their newly public anti-contraception stance reveals more of their true motivation. And that's our opening.
You take their newly public anti-contraception stance and shout it from the rooftops and drive them back with it.
This isn't the end. This is the turning point.

Also, women republicans need to start speaking out and telling their party they will no longer support Republican candidates who won't protect women's rights. Decent men can launch such recalls, too.
It's time to draw a land in the sand and become one-issue voters on this, everyone.

(5,198 posts)with an overview of what we are up against. I knew it was bad but--we do have a civil rights battle on our hands. How women are treated is how gays, children, minorities are treated--we are all connected.

(3,596 posts)many of these drastic restrictions on the availability to abortion are subject to constitutional challenge because they fly in the face of Supreme Court precedent.
Now I fully believe the uterus watchers (ugly old white men that can't get it up without Viagara and can't get any action without paying for it) have conspired to push as many extreme laws across the nation as possible. They fully expect the Supreme (idiots) to take up one or more of these cases and they hope they will overturn Roe v. Wade.
Even if they lose with the Supreme (idiots), they have stirred up the base..that is those that only care about keeping the fetus in the uterus. They don't really care about life because they don't care about ensuring the mother and fetus receive appropriate pre-natal care. They don't care once the child is born if he/she has a loving and safe environment, access to health care, decent education, nutrition, etc.

(36,221 posts)The right wingers feel, correctly, imho, that it would be denying a woman a medical procedure based on her sex.
Watching this happen, is what gives me great pause about judicial ruling only for marriage equality. We need the laws on the books, not just court decisions. Not that the court decisions aren't great. But people should not be relying on them solely.
I believe the ERA would make the laws prohibiting gay marriage unconstitutional.
Maybe, we could all come together one day, and make it happen.
Live and Learn
(12,769 posts)shows exactly why we need the ERA. Perhaps this will make us demand it be passed.

(25,111 posts)actually, they will lose by large margins. What 2010 elections brought, being bought and also the brain washing, I think people are waking up. The sleepers are awakening, and they know it.
As far as the media, well MSNBC at night is great and so is CURRENT.... The progressive radio is also spreading what these so called religious people are doing. It took many years for the so called "Christain" media to spread, and it may take sometime for the "true" Christians to get back the message, but I think its already happening.
