Barman tried to put Tony Blair under a citizen's arrest for 'crimes against peace'

Cheeky barman tried to put Tony Blair under a citizen's arrest for 'crimes against peace' while the former Prime Minister dined with his family in a trendy east London restaurant

A barman tried to put Tony Blair under a citizen's arrest while the former Prime Minister was out having dinner.

Blair was eating at Tramshed in east London when Twiggy Garcia approached him.

The part-time producer said he put his hand on his shoulder and said 'Mr Blair, this is a citizen's arrest for a crime against peace, namely your decision to launch an unprovoked war against Iraq.'

Mr Garcia told Vice magazine how Blair then attempted to engage in a debate before one of his son's went to get security. The worker then left the restaurant to avoid any trouble.

The publicity on the subject will be sufficiently embarrassing for the Tiny Blur.

Within a year, my correspondents called him a liar, etc. I said what's wrong?

Then they'd go off into a rant about what he was doing. And these were not people who followed political matters at all.

And that was before Iraq, his appearance in Congress here. Naturally, he looked sooo good in comparison to GWB. I did enjoy his PM question sessions.

Does he still have ANY fans left?

The Labour party is divided between Nu Labour (the Blairite crew who moved the party massively to the right) and the old Labour stalwarts. Current leader, Ed Milliband, is trying to go slightly to the left of Blair but not into old Labour socialist territory. Time will tell if it works but it's not looking good so far.

He got the idea from arrestblair.org.

http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/tony-blair-subjected-to-humiliating-citizens-arrest-at-tramshed-restaurant-shoreditch-9073064.html

...

Mr Garcia said: “I didn’t expect him to start debating with me. I think he actually believed the lies that were coming out of his mouth.”

But the barman’s time was running out. “One of his sons got up and went to get the plain-clothes security from downstairs. I decided to get out of there sharpish... I quit my job there and then.”

Mr Garcia said he had fantasised for years about “arresting” Mr Blair, who is now a Middle East peace envoy. It was not a plan, he claimed, but “something I have wanted to do for a few years”.

“I had been waiting for the opportunity after seeing the website arrestblair.org and it just so happened we were in the same place at the same time,” he said. “I believe Blair is responsible for the mass murder of Iraqi civilians after taking our country into an illegal war.”

...

What a great story.

We have some excellent candidates for this treatment on our own soil (Bush, Cheney, Rove, Condi, Rumsfeld, Yu, etc.)

However, while most states allow citizen's arrests, the majority require the presence of the citizen performing the arrest during the crime. A number of states have more flexible language in their laws, though. The California Penal Code, for example says the following:

837. A private person may arrest another:
1. For a public offense committed or attempted in his presence.
2. When the person arrested has committed a felony, although not
in his presence.
3. When a felony has been in fact committed, and he has reasonable cause for believing the person arrested to have committed it.
